Mundine only goes for safe fights: Green

Australian world champion Danny Green has called on Anthony Mundine to stop fighting chumps and step up with the big boys of world boxing.

Green won the IBO cruiserweight title when he defeated Julio Cesar Dominguez in Mississippi earlier this month and will fight American superstar Roy Jones Jnr in November.

Mundine, meanwhile, is still busy frying his fish on the local scene and is currently eyeing off a middleweight rematch with Tasmanian Danny Geale.

Green said it was time his arch rival stepped out of his comfort zone.
"I'm not sure what his next fight is, I dare say it would be against someone that is going to be a relatively very safe option for him," Green said during a visit to Perth Glory training on Thursday.
"It's pretty much a pattern now."

Green was lured out of retirement earlier this year after he was promised a lucrative rematch with Mundine, who won the first fight between the pair in 2006. But when it came to finalising a deal Mundine quickly went cold on the proposal, although Green's recent success on the world stage seems to have re-sparked Mundine's interest.

"If Greeny has still got that cruiserweight after Roy Jones, he knows where I'm at," Mundine told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

Green said he had little time nowadays to even think about Mundine.

"I'm fighting one of the best fighters of all time so Choco's definitely on the backburner as far as our fight goes," Green said.

"As far as what he achieved and what he's going to achieve and what he wants to achieve, he's just got to step up basically.

"He's got to stop fighting blokes that are a given and put himself out of his comfort zone.

Daniel Geale was 21-0, rated by Ring Magazine, was IBO world Champion. Held wins over 29-0 and Daniel Dawson and had defeated JR European Amature Champion

Agreed Cotto - I've just thrown the article out there for discussion.

IMO both have been guilty of this particular allegation, with Geale being a pretty rare acception to Mundine's usual choice of opponent.

Green is clearly on a high at present having RJJ on the hook, and is using it to enhance his cred against/above Mundine.

...plus there's always the inevitable Green vs Mundine II to be enhanced by some niggling in the media.

Geale is a top 5 Middleweight with a big chance of beating the winner of the vacant IBF title. Hes in with a real chance against Sturm aswell.

Is this "Green was lured out of retirement earlier this year after he was promised a lucrative rematch with Mundine, who won the first fight between the pair in 2006. But when it came to finalising a deal Mundine quickly went cold on the proposal,..." bare any truth to it??

As I remember the rematch was speculated a lot after the fight and faded away by the time Green retired right?

With Mundine stating no interest from the start of Green's announcement.

you are right and i wouldnt take anything green says seriously after i saw his doco.mundine is the best fighter green has faced. and lost easily.mundine has fought kessler and ottke who are much better than green and the latter who green ducked.green camr out of retirement in a helicopter and challenged him to a LHW fight as mundine was preparing to fight his first fight at MW:patsch.maybe roy is exploring other options as the fight with green is not signed and green is trying to lure mundine into a fight for the $.

It just pisses me off that people are allowed to publish this stuff as gospel. No use complaining though, not like it's the only time/topic it happens

As much as its a case of hypocrisy, Green isnt wrong about Mundine either. Mundine it appears just wants to make sure he doesn't have an L on his record before he faces Green again. That way if Green comes off a loss after RJJ then Mundine holds the cards regarding the purse of the fight.

If Mundine becomes unrealistic (regarding $$) for their rematch, and Green is off a loss to RJJ, Green can easily just hang up the gloves again...

These two make Days of our Lives look boring lol

Woah woah woah, he hasn't fought him yet. Green wouldn't have made these comments before RJJ negotiations started, all of a sudden he thinks this qualifies him to bag Mundine? I'm a Green fan, and not too fond of Mundine, but both these guys hand pick their opponents for less risk and greater reward. Old news.
