Exactly. The guy didn't fight Thomas, Dokes, Coatzee, Page and then didn't give Spoon or Weaver a rematch but still thinks he has the right to accuse Foreman of avoiding him

Holmes beats foreman by UD. Maybe Foreman lands a few bombs but with the chin Holmes had he would of taken them and survived. Holmes would just stay on the outside, stick and move, use his wonderful jab and right hand behind it and Holmes takes it.

Don't know about the later years though.... probably Foreman by late KO for it's worth.

I agree, George learned to relax and was fighting 12 rds at a good pace...even in his losing effort to Holyfield he had new found stamina that was lacking in the 70's

    I certainly can't.

Hell, even some of the men that Foreman defeated in his 40's such as Lou Savarese, Crawford Grimsley, Adilson Rodriguez, etc.. Were no worse than some of the fighters Holmes was taking on in the prime of his title reign, like Scott Frank, Lucien Rodriguez, Scott Ledoux, Ossie Ocasio, Alfredo Evangelista, Marvis Frazier, David Bey, Leon spinks.....Oh ****, I think I just listed half of Holmes' defenses..

Holmes is so bitter! The Foreman-Briggs thing is a good point.
Foreman really should have had the decision in that fight.
Foreman was too strong for Holmes in '99 and the '73 Foreman would have knocked prime Holmes out.

It's worth noting Dempsey gets completely nailed for not fighting Harry Wills, while Holmes by comparison seems to get a pass for avoiding not one, but half a dozen fighters during his reign! Here's the annual Ring Magazine ratings for some of his years as champ,

    End of 1981
    Larry Holmes, Champion
    1. Mike Weaver
    2. Gerry Cooney
    3. Michael Dokes
    4. Greg Page
    5. Gerrie Coetzee
    6. Trevor Berbick
    7. Leon Spinks
    8. James Tillis
    9. Randall (Tex) Cobb
    10. Renaldo Snipes
This year is actually one of the best for Holmes. Weaver he did fight but refused to rematch despite being the number 1 contender, he did fight Cooney, but then rounding out the top 5 you have 3 guys that Holmes avoided. Next year is the end of 1982

The number 1 contender here is Dokes, who he doesn't fight. Then you have Weaver, no rematch and Coatzee at 3 who he never fought.

Here's where it starts getting bad, end of 1983

He fought none of the top 4, and didn't give the number 5 Spoon a rematch after their close encounter. Weak.

Him not fighting Thomas is probably the most blatant duck job of his career.

Holmes deserves to get slammed for his title reign. Yes, it was the second longest and he piled up the 2nd most defenses, but the quality of the opponents is laughable and he deserves to get similar criticism as Dempsey.

Larry Holmes was facing worse compittion then Foreman was in there last 5 fights and I would certainly think the Lou Lou Savarese and Shannon Biggs are better then Brian Nielsen & Butterbean....just compare Holmes last 5 fight to Foreman's

    Larry Holmest lat 5 fights

I think Holmes looked pretty awful against McCall in 1995, noticeably worse than he'd been against Mercer and Holyfield in 1992.
And in 1997 he got a gift win over Maurice Harris.
Arguably he may have raised his game for Foreman in 1999, but I reckon we are fortunate that spectacle never happened.

A fight between Holmes and Foreman would always have been close. If Larry could move and peck away with the jab, Foreman likely loses. If George gets Larry in trouble, then Holmes is less likely to come back the way he did against Shavers. Foreman was a much better boxer than Shavers. Foreman is a better boxer than most people give him credit for. No way Holmes is knocking out Foreman. Holmes didn't have the punch and Foreman's beard was study. I have trouble deciding who is better because their styles are so qualitatively different and their accomplishments are damned impressive, with each owning a devastating victory.

I don't get Holmes making the Ali comparison, though. Ali didn't fight Foreman the way Holmes says he would fight Foreman. Holmes couldn't have taken what Ali took than night. Ali scrapped with Foreman. It was a crazy fight. Holmes was neither the improvisational wizard nor master strategists Ali was.

Larry always had the style to beat George, even later on.
