Middleweight Tournament Semi Final: Marvin Hagler vs Charley Burley

I suspect that both these fighters benefited from questionable decisions.

 

Burley KO1. After the Fitz win, the pair spent time in a Jail cell where Fitz taught him all the tricks of the trade (like Choynski did to Johnson).

Hagler was a little overconfident against the much smaller but faster Charley Burley (like he was against Leonard) and he started off in the orthodox stance, which isnt his best stance.

Burley, who managed to box like a faster, more durable and cautious version of leonard in the last fight became a quicker combination throwing version of Fitz in this one. He landed the Famous Solar plexus- left hook combo an unsuspecting Hagler who was caught cold coming in and surprisingly had Hagler out cold before the 3rd, 4th or 5th punch of his combo Landed on the unsuspecting Hagler.

 

The little film available of Burley shows him working from distance ,looking to pot shot with his right hand,but Ive read he went in on other guys, like JD Turner whom he destroyed.
Burley had real power and obviously was a very cagey boxer,could he set traps for Hagler and make him pay?
My impression is that Hager would be the busier of the two,and possibly the aggressor,would he be effective though?
I go for Burley by split dec,but it is a pick em really imo.

 

This is a very interesting match up. I certainly think Burley is more skillfull, better shot picker, better puncher and better defensive head movement. Hagler is stronger, has the cast iron chin, is a southpaw and will take a punch to land a punch if need be and at mid range will let loose with fast combinations to the head an body if aloud too.

Hmm I'm not 100% sure on this, I see it certainly going the full 15, Burley taking the early rounds and outboxing Marvin early, Hagler would pick up the pace and attempt to break Burley down the mid rounds onwards and it would become a close back and forth fight

Burley's flatter feet and lower punch output gives Hagler the advantage in sealing a close but clear win.

 

Burley would land his fair share of counters I believe, but it's Haglers changing up of brute force and boxing that win him a fairly close decision, in a fight that turns for the nasty late on when Burley hurts Hagler with a left hook and both men put their iron chins to the test in a slugfest Hagler comes out on top on due to being more adept in that situation and throwing more punches.

Hagler 10-5. Out of all the matchups so far, the one I'd like to see the most :good

 

Hagler would likely win by being more busy in my opinion, he'd eat a lot of leather but his whiskers are fit for the job.

 

Tough fight, with both fighters giving punishment. Hagler switching to Southpaw could very well get the slight advantage he needs to steal this one. With his stiff right jab & power in both hands. Marvin by 15 round split decision.

I dont think hed repeat it in a rematch, though. Firstly, his confidence would be sky high after beating Fitz. Secondly, i think Marvin Hagler would be supremely over confident after just dealing with Harry Greb and would not have any respect for the smaller and older styled Burley. I think he would not be fully concentrating. thirdly, Hagler was hit early against Hearns. I think that this was the best chance of beating Hagler, ambush him early and be lucky enough and good enough to drop him, only unlike Hearns you need to finish the job. Okay (i made up the Fitz teaching him bit) but, Burley, despite his record had plenty of power and could still unload . I think he sets a trap early and Hagler falls into it. Unlike Hearns, Burley doesnt let him off the hook and Hagler pays the penalty for being overconfident and keeping an eye on Monzon in the final. If there was a rematch, i am not sure who i would pick, but i know it wouldnt be a repeat of the KO1.

All a little fictional, but in the context of the way the tournament is going, not totally out of the question. By the way, where are the police in this one, if the police stop the fight early again, Hagler is in trouble. Burley looks like he would currently get the Newspaper decision!

Watch Hagler Hearns. Hearns fights a lot like Burley in that he has the wide stance and his shots have plenty behind them. Hagler recovered and got into the fight because he was able to hit Hearns back. He wont be able to hit Charlie back, and the fact that he keeps coming forward and trying to land (which worked so well against Tommy) will go against him and cost him big time against Burley.
