Carlos Zarate Jr's amateur record is 29 wins and 4 losses with more than half of his wins by referee stoppage. He says his jab is his best punch and he can easily convert it into a straight left to punish his opponents. He will debut at lightweight on the same card that will have both world champ Edgar Sosa and WBC youth champ Saul Alvarez defend their respective titles. Source Esto.
What has he achieved as an amateur? His record does not necessarily suggest anything... phenomenal.. i hope I'm not being overly critical.. but my record is comparable if not... better than his... and I'm not looking to go into the pro ranks anytime soon... at least not before 50 fights... lmao
True but some boxers have natural ability, despite how little they achieved as a amateur. Salvador Sanchez had 14 amateur fights and went on to become a top 30 ATG. Rocky Marciano had about 16 amateur fights. George Foreman had very few as well. Obviously it is a great help, to box at a high amateur level, but in this day and age amateur boxing is very different to pro boxing, so its not especially necessary.
Not many Mexican Boxers ever near 50 amateur fights. I think Barrera turned pro when he was 15. I forgot to mention he has won both the Mexican Golden Gloves and Golden Fists touranments. I wonder if anybody could name a Mexican champ with an extensive amateur background?
i hope carlos zarate jr. becomes a good fighter because pipino cuevas jr.'s son was a disaster going 13-3 (all losses by KO).
I did not know about Cuevas son. 13-3 ain't bad, but the ko's are a negetive. Two things: One, they usually do not grow up in conditions as tough as their fathers did. Two, the obvious----not all sons can do what father's did. I was around in 1970's, and used to wait every month for Ring and the two other magazines of that time to come out every month. California report was big thing. Very big. Leading up to Zarate vs. Zamora, fight got months long build up. Zamora and him ko'd about every one they fought. Zarate was very tall for division, and skinny; Zamora very short and powerful. Zarate won by ko. I still have never seen fight though.
hank, i grew up in the los angeles area in the 70's and i remember the hype leading up to the fight. i still to this day cannot ever recall a more hyped up bantamweight fight like zarate/zamora. i was rooting for zarate but was a fan of both. imo, zarate is rated as the biggest puncher in the bantamweight division and is rated all-time in the top 2-3.
Librado Andrade had 22 amateur fight with 3 wins and 18 losses. Yet he is a top pro boxer and has had two world title fights and is 24-2 as a pro.
I was thinking I'd be only one who remembered. In New York it got little coverage, just a paragraph in one paper. I had to wait for magazines to come out to read details.
Thanks a lot, I enjoyed that. Never remembered it went to fouth round, thought it ended earlier, like 1st. It's been close to 40 years. I'm going to watch that a couple of more times. I also did not remember ever reading about that nut jumping in ring in first round
