I watched that video earlier by that boxingwizard guy, jab - right hand over and over again. It got me thinking about different types of combinations.

When you see someone like Kessler fight he seems quite robotic and then you see RJJ and he's throwing all these different combos.

How much variety of combinations do you practise when you are training?

When im on the bags or pads im some sort of offensive badass throwing everything out there. Now when its sparring or fight time its basically alittle to much jabbing and right handing quite honestly, ill rip a few great left hooks to the body but IMO my actually arsenal in a fight needs to be improved.

Im the same , iv only been going 5 months or so but even so the couple times that iv spared its just been jab jab right hand. Suppose its playing it safe. I assume the only thing i can do is spar more and keep working the pads and doing drills ect ect?

when training i practise them all, but when fighting at competition level against a good fighter its limited to 1 -2, 1 -2 left hook, left hook right hand, can finish with left hook, right hand left hook, can finish with right hand, double jab right hand, basically the basic combos no uppercuts followed by straights or anything like that, against a weaker opponent it could go up to things like left jab left hook left jab downstairs risky and if you get caught you look like a cocky prat

    Jab - Cross - Jab
    Jab - Uppercut - Hook
    Jab - Jab - Cross - Jab
    Cross - Jab - Jab - Cross - Jab

Those are what my trainer usually calls most of the time when he directs bag work.

You should be comfortable throwing endless combinations, and you should not have to 'think' about a combination before throwing it - you need to repeatedly 'drill' combinations to be able to get them off come fight night.

I have a numbered list in our gym, and these combinations are drilled into our fighters during shadowboxing, pad work etc. We have straight combinations, 2 phase combinations, counter combinations, set up combinations etc. Out of the 'pool' of combinations, we try to identify which one's will work best against the next opponent from the information we have available, and we focus on them a little more in the lead up to a fight.

You cannot stick with a 'cookie cutter' combination in the hope that it will work against everyone. Every opponent is different, so you have to be comfortable working with several different combinations/styles with a view to making your nights work as easy, and painless as possible.

Regarding the above combination, we do something similar. I found that where you throw the right uppercut, I throw a right hook to the body as I step to the left, pivot, cuffing left hook to lower the opponents rh and fire off a straight right it works a lot better. Think changing angles and mixing up to body and head - keep your opponent guessing!

So you can gurantee that this 10 move combination will work against any opponent, I doubt that somehow. Thats a punching drill, not a combination.
