    Dempsey was More Popular then Babe Ruth in the 20's or so i have read

    Sullivan was Massivly Popular in his Day as well

    Daniel Mendoza was hugely popular in the late 1700's. One of his fights was actually reported in the paper ahead of the storming of the Bastile. The equivalent today would be a Klitschko fight being reported before the violent overthrow of the American government.

    Dempsey after he lost to Tunney in the first fight became even more famous. I also agree with CHEF about Louis after his demolition of Schemling
