Gerald McClennan Vs Kelly Pavlik

Just guess why I have that avatar Pavlik vs. Halmich. Most of the hardcore Pavlik fans have me on ignore because I kick them in the butt when they are at it again slagging Abraham 24/7 twisting facts like nipples on Saturday. However, fair is fair, I have no reason to diss Pavlik and overlook his skills just because he has that type of fans.

P.S.: Awesome body and face, but that type of shoes doesn't float my boat.

 

The avatar doesnt bother me...but that post was way overboard. Even though it had some well thought out points, its like we are thinking of a different fighter here. Kelly just doesnt consistently do those things and if he does them better then G-Man its not to that degree.

WhataRock, you're a damn good poster, but I'll have to argue your point on "very good fighters", as Gerald only fought and iced one man who fit that description.

As I've posted before, McClellan only faced 1 top 10 fighter in his entire middleweight career despite being ranked top 10 himself for a few years, and Benn was the 2nd top 10 fighter he fought once he moved up, going 2-1 for his career in top 10 fights. The Julian Jackson wins basically put him in the top range of the division at the time, but we never saw how he'd do vs his peers- Roy (I know for personal reasons they'd likely never have fought), McCallum, Castro, Hopkins, Reggie Johnson, Toney, and John David Jackson. All were ranked in the years Gerald was in the division, and none of the fights happened. I don't believe he could've been "the man" in that kind of environment if he'd fought the tougher fights available to him at the weight.

But, in a head to head matchup at Middleweight, I've no problem giving him his due (it's the mind-boggling hype he gets at 168 that has me scratching my head). Kelly flat out gets hit too much for my liking, and Gerald has the mentality and ability to land and land big against that type of fighter. He'd have to fight an awfully sloppy fight for me to pick Pavlik- more often than not, Gerald would be the victor in my book.

 

Preaching to the choir Rock...Im well on the G-Man is overrated wagon and have been for a long time.

That was more in response to the silly reasoning JoeAv had..His logic that because McCllelan lost to some mediocre (one of whom wasnt really, Dennis Milton was a fine boxer and a top amatuer) fighters early in his career he wouldnt have a chance against elite fighters at is peak is clearly flawed..Considering he knocked off guys far superior to the blokes he lost to.
In a historical context I probably wouldnt even say Jackson was a "very good" fighter at that stage of his career...but for the division at the time and relative to the guys G-Man had lost to, I dont think the description is to unreasonable.

This is just a bad matchup for Kelly..When is all said and done he will be without a doubt the greater fighter. But his defence is far to pourous and he has been rocked several times by guys with inferior fire power and delivery systems to McClellan.
I dont think he has the skills to consistently outbox Gerald...nor does he have the temperant because he likes to go to war..I also dont think his power is enough in this one.
It would be a good back and forth fight whilst it lasted but Id put my money on G-Man nearly every time to get the win...and there are several middleweights througout history Id say give Kelly similar problems..though they will never be remembered as great as he will.

 

Good post overall, and that sentence basically sums it up in a nutshell. Pavlik just has a propensity to get hit too much, and going against McClellan in a firefight because he's got more balls than defense is a recipe that would most likely result in a heaping bowl of knockout being served up sooner or later. Because of the likelihood of it being an all out war, t'd be exciting while it lasted.

I'm sure my vote here will undoubtedly surprise a good number of G-man fans (G-fans?) since I usually play devil's advocate when it comes to him

 

Jackson and Pavlik don't fight much alike.

 

I agree with you on this. While McClellan is frequently overrated because of the "what could have been" factor, I still would make him the favorite against Pavlik. Pavlik is more textbook than McClellan, but slower. Neither guy is especially tough to hit, but I think McClellan is more explosive and will get enough shots home and take Pavlik's shots well enough.

G-Man should prevail in an entertaining fight.

I see Kelly being competitive with Gerald Mcclellan for the 4,5 rounds But I see G-man being too much even for the powerful Kelly Pavlik..G-man by 8 round TKO in a war
