Yup Dana is hedging his bets alright. Former UFC champion and future hall-of-famer Matt Hughes (43-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC) recently followed in the footsteps of Randy Couture by signing a multi-fight deal with the UFC, ensuring his storied career will continue in the octagon. Hughes announced the signing, as well as his intentions to film a hunting show, on his official website. "Last week I went out to Vegas and I signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC, which is much like my last contract," Hughes stated. "I also brought up the fact that I wanted to do a hunting show and they thought that would be a good thing." As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, UFC president Dana White said he anticipates an early 2010 return for the 11-year veteran. While many MMA observers have speculated that recent UFC signees and past Hughes foes Dennis Hallman and Frank Trigg might be leading candidates for the former champ, the H.I.T. Squad head said he might be facing a new opponent. "They still have to find out who, where and when my next fight will be, and I will try to post that info ASAP," Hughes said. "Nothing is decided yet, so anything you might be reading on the internet right now is just rumors and speculation. However, one name the UFC did bring up is a person I've never fought before." Is anyone really interested in Trigg Hughes again?
No way. They made magic in the rematch at UFC 52 but that was Hughes 2nd victory over Trigg. Trigg just can't beat him. Maybe Trigg would have had a shot to beat Matt around the time Matt was fighting Thiago Alves because Hughes had bad knee problems. I think his layoff is gonna do him well and he actually looked pretty ok in the Serra fight. It was his first fight back, I was expecting him to look rustier. I just don't like Hughes standing southpaw. He should switch back. With all that being said, I'm glad he's sticking around for a little while longer. I've been a hughes fan since he beat Carlos Newton with that power bomb.
I imagine he will fight Dennis Hallman, who has two wins over him. I wouldn't mind another Trigg fight; it doesn't really mean anything but if it is half as entertaining as their first two I would watch. Probably his biggest fan on here, but even I'm not sure how much he really has left. He can beat a ton of guys, but probably none of the contenders.
he has certainly seen better days, but a legend no doubt.. maybe a move to 185?? can't see were he can go at 175,koscheck or a rematch with penn.
Personally i'm not the slightest interested in seeing him fight gsp or penn again...No matter how good he's gonna look in all his future fights...
If GSP vs. Machida or Silva can be discussed seriously, why not? :deal Matt could be less shot than Tito.
Hughes is pretty much done. Karo Parisyan would be a nice fight for him. I would like to see him fight josh koscheck or jon fitch. forget trigg he already beat him twice. Koscheck vs Hughes is the fight i want to see.
