Pacquiao overrules Roach September 4, 2009 Manny Pacquiao is bringing Freddie Roach to the country whether he likes it or not. Kailangan n'ya pumunta (He has to go), Pacquiao said during a press conference yesterday at the Crowne Plaze Hotel in Ortigas Center when asked about his training plans for the November 14 duel with Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto. With 10 weeks to go before the fight, Pacquiao said he will set up training camp in Baguio once he arrives from the five-city press/publicity tour that kicks off at Yankee Stadium in New York on September 10. Therell be similar events lined up in Caguas in Puerto Rico, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Pacquiao expects to be back by September 17 or 18 and will immediately motor to Baguio to begin working out, hopefully, with Roach already in town. Roach had initially opposed the Baguio training camp, saying they wont be able to train in utmost concentration there what with regular visits of Pacquiao fans. Still, Roach said he will do his darn best to whip Pacquiao into fiery form in time for the 12-round welterweight war with Cotto. I will just do the best that I can, said Roach, obviously disappointed over Pacquiaos decision to pick Baguio over the high-altitude and rough terrain of Toluca, Mexico. Roach said he will be joined in the Philippines by conditioning coach Alex Ariza and three sparring partners. Pacquiao said his decision to camp out in the Pines City is not a sign that he is taking Cotto lightly. Kilala ko ang style ni Cotto. Malaki, malakas at hindi bobo si Cotto, said Pacquiao, who believes an eight-week training camp--and not more than or less than that--suits him fine. This content is protected Pacquiao also took the opportunity to appease his fans and followers by his decision not to go into training camp this early. Gustong-gusto ko yung pinaparusahan ang aking sarili sa ensayo kayat huwag silang mag-alala, said Pacquiao, who is in the final stages of finishing his showbiz commitments. Well Pac is right, he knows his body and how focused he is for this fight better than we do. As fans we cant do nothing but see whose right come November.
IMO, everything will be fine no matter where MP trains. When MP trains in the Wild Card Gym, he also had a lot of fans visiting him and that didn't cause any problems w/ his training.
It was a problem during the camp for Morales/Pac I. The local fans are going to be much more rabid not to mention the media is going to be all over the place. At Wild Card the media had a 2-3 man crew at best, over here's there's a whole army of reporters following his every move. Not to mention daily interviews, distractions, visitors, people are going to be banging on his door like a mutha. And you know how Pac can't say no to **** like that.
And he had to kick out a bunch of those free-loaders last camp. Training in the Phillipines is a stupid idea. Pacquiao has the ability, but Roach is the brains behind everything they do. Well, when Pacquiao gets stopped, *******'s can't blame Freddie.
Most of Roach's prize fighters dont even reside in L.A (Khan, Rigcondeaux, etc) they can still make the trip to PI and get training with Roach there.
Roach is the trainer, therefore I feel he should have the upper hand in deciding where the training is to be held, when, and how. For Pacs sake I hope he trains properly with focus and intesity. I'm sure he'll be ready come fight night, Pac always looks ready. But we'll see how his training goes.
I understand that a zoo atmosphere will occur but I think that the Pac people, especially Roach, can throw a very tight security surrounding the training facility to keep the fans and media from going in and out. Considering Pacs' status in the Philippines, a tight security is a given.
