Marciano supposedly sparred well over 200 rounds, came into the ring in the best shape of his career, a f*cking animal. What was the story with Walcott?
Marciano landed a rarity for him...a big punch in the opening round..though nowhere as big as that fist fight, but still, be cauught Jersey Joe and decked him, and Joe, much like Jerry Quarry in that fluke ko loss to Chuvalo I believe just got lost in thought and jumped up too late and missed the count. This really pissed off Joe, but he had no one to blame but himself.
Walcott ****ed up the count.............. BUT! He sure as hell took his sweet ass time getting up........ Walcott should've got up at 8......... Walcott jacked-off........ Walcott was not out of it........... He was ready to go when the ref called it off cause Walcott was slightly hunched over at 10........ It was a bogus finish......... MR.BILL
Marciano came out much faster and stronger than he had in the 1st fight, and took Walcott by surprise. Then Rocky snuck in a quick right hand from an odd angle that Walcott never saw coming, and dropped him on his ass. I think getting dropped by a punch like that so soon into the fight pretty much took the fight out of Walcott. All in all, it was a great performance by Rocky (probably his career best) that gets very underrated because people are quick to dismiss Walcott as "quitting" or "taking a dive".
It was one of those things. Ali - Liston 2 was one of those things, too. We'll probably never know what really happened in either of those fights. We just have to accept that they were KO1 and KO1 and evaluate the performances accordingly. The same goes for Flynn - Dempsey 1 for that matter. Boxing history is full of such things. I love boxing! :good
I don't have a problem with legit 1st round KO's........ But I hate stuff like "Marciano-Walcott 2" and "Ali-Liston 2." Or major blunders like "Weaver-Dokes 1." That stuff chaps my ass raw........ MR.BILL:bbb "Tyson-McNeely" and "Tyson-Seldon" were disgraceful......
Ali-Liston II was a flagrant premeditated dive IMO. From the moment he hit the canvas, Ali was screaming that Liston was in the midst of taking a dive. I wouldn't compare that to Marciano-Walcott, which was a legitimate KD from a solid blow. That looked more like a possible case of a fighting coming to try, but then basically saying "No mas" after feeling the heat. I'd compare that more to Tyson-Spinks than Ali-Liston.
Walcott was a confident Champion and at the ripe age of 37 put it all together. His defense vs Marciano was proberly one of his best fights. Walcott was confident he could out box and pin point power punch the less experienced Marciano but after a war of a fight that JJ boxed and fought a masterpeice, he was devastated by one of the hardest punches ever thrown past 12 Rds. Misfortune for JJ and fortune for Rocky...If you notice Rocky and Joe Louis were always improved in rematches and JJ got caught early and went home with his check and health...he was still sharp minded and impressivly tough looking and he was in his 60's when I met him
I believe Walcott elected not to get up. The history of boxing is full of fighters who get up just fine at the count of 11 or 12. I tend to think Walcott could have got up in Round one as he was looking at the referee, and got up fine after the count of 10. Walcott claimed he blacked out during the the mid part of the count and came to toward the very end. As Muhammad Ali aptly put it, " Most guys can get up but choose not to "
I think in that rematch, when Rocky decked him, ol' Jersey Joe HAD to be having a sort of flashback to the 1st fight..about what kind of **** he had in store again with Rocky, and here it was barely through the 1st round and Joe was put on his back...it may have been a temporary memory induced paralysis that Joe snapped out of and then tried to get up, but too late. His mind had wandered likke Quarry when Chuvalo put him down..maybe a bit of shock too was involved.
My grandmother told me once that she, my dad, uncle and aunt (the whole family on my dad's side were beer drinking fight fans) were watching the fight that night on their little 1950 Philco tv, and she got up to get a beer. Well, she got the beer, but hadn't made it out of the kitchen back to the tv before the fight was over..she said "there was Walcott, sitting there like he was in a stupor, like some guy just waking up in bed one morning from the alarm clock"..in other words, Walcott didn't look like he wanted to get up..like I said, maybe having a "flashback".
I think Walcott could have made it up...i think he realized he was in for another night of hell and decided to take the easy payday
I just rewatched it. Marciano did look to be in terrific shape. Joe did look a bit shell shocked going into the bout to begin with. After a slow couple of minutes Marciano missed with a hook but follows up with a right half hook - half uppercut that landed solid on the left side of Walcott's face .. it was not the most flush shot in the world but Joe did seem to truly get knocked down, banging his head on the canvas as well ... if he blew the count or just said fu-k it, I'm not sure. I do know Rocky looked in great shape and came to fight.
