So if Ward loses to Kessler but remains standing at the end of the 12th. That loss wont be as bad as either of the other 2 first round outcomes. Do we all think that if Froch beats Dirrel then Dirrel doesn't have a chance. And also if Taylor beats Abraham, that Abraham won't have a chance. Where as Ward could still do well if he shows well ?
That is irrelevant. The question here is that their fight is really only relevant IF Ward wins. That would be the biggest wrench into the paper landscape of the series. Also even if Ward loses, yet remains standing and has a good showing. It will still be somewhat of a victory for him. Unlike the other 2 fights. If Dirrel loses to Froch. Well I haven't heard anyone say that he will still have a chance. If he runs and only outpoints Froch. Well people will shun him like he farted. He would have stand up to Froch and win (because some reason people here don't think Froch can box ...) Just like Abraham Vs Taylor. Which I think goes both ways there. If Taylor gets KO'd then it is basically career over for him. If he gets out pointed. We will all be like WTF? If Abraham loses, then he will surely get out boxed by the others.
I think JT is the only one for whom the first fight is "do or die." If you beat Hopkins twice, put in 12 rounds with Winky, and 19 rounds with Pavlik, and then suffer back to back losses to Carl The Clumsy and Arthur "the can killer" Abraham, retirement is the only viable option.
This could be interesting because JT's commitment to boxing has been suspect of late. If he loses to AA will he stick out the next fight for the pay check? Two losses and Miranda may get that fight with him he always wanted and get featured on Friday Night Fights to boot.
I'm sorry if this isn't on topic, but how the hell does a two-eyed person, let alone someone with the least bit of boxing knowledge, watch Andre Ward fight and not immediately conclude that he's going to outclass everybody he faces in this tournament? And even worse, how does a sane person with two eyes figure Ward has no shot against Kessler? I don't think it's possible. I think you'd have to be blind AND insane to even think about turning those insane thoughts into such insane words. People really should watch these fighters actually fight before jumping to conclusions. As for the original question, Ward is not going to be losing by decision anytime soon. That's not a guess.
Because many of the guys saying that Ward will loose are people who have never seen Ward fight - they are just guessing based on what they have heard. Don't take it seriously - we will soon get to see what happens when they meet.
Ward has class and all the skills to outbox the other guys taking part in the tournament, but there's a question mark what will happen if he gets hit really hard. Yes, he should be able to not get hit by something big, but it can happen. Next thing is that he hasn't got the power to KO the strong guys he is going to face. I don't know who is underestimating him. In my eyes, he has a decent chance to win the tournament if he stays focussed and uses his skills to avoid getting hit big. However, Kessler has to be the favorite in this, because he has the best record and brings with him the best overall package. He is strong, has a decent jab, a good defense. The man will be hard to beat. Froch has earned respect for his last wins. However, I'm not sold that he can either prevail against decent punchers like Abraham or decent boxers like Ward. We will see - perhaps he will be a huge surprise for the most of us. Dirrell is virtually unknown to me. I think he's got good skills, but what I've heard is that he's never faced such a strong competition. AA is my favorite fighter. I think he has his chances to win the tournament, but he's definitely not someone who can be seen as a favorite for the title. The favorites are Kessler and Ward. However, AA has a chance against any opponent he is going to face in the tournament. He's the toughest guy and hardest puncher in SMW.
Excellent points. And we are in agreeance as far as the top three goes....Ward, Kessler and Abraham. Kessler is probably the worst draw Ward could have hoped for. As fans, let's hope for no injuries next weekend.
I think all six can win it actually. When I change focus from one to the next I think that person can win it too.. The only one I think will probably NOT win the whole thing is Taylor. He may end in top 3, because he is an excellent fighter. He is a top class fighter. However, I am not sure he can deliver in 5 straight superfights (3 in the rounds and 1 in semis and 1 in the final). That is a tough call for anyone. Who knows, perhaps Jermain comes out of this P4P top 5 again and shames us all? Time will tell.
For someone whos hasn't faced a top 10, Ward is well considered I think. I saw a very good technical fighter against Miranda, fast, excellent footwork. He doesn't hit hard enough though and we don't know how his chin will hold against the super six big punchers. It's easier not to be hit by Miranda than by Kessler. It's always the same with young prospects as Ward and Dirrell: will they look as dominant against elite?
Ward is a sleeper in this tournament. I also think Abraham is getting too much credit for never campaigning at 168, and he is considerably smaller than the other guys in the tourney.
