As much as I like Harry Greb, I have to go with Jack Dempsey in this one. Greb was almost certainly faster, but Dempsey was fast enough in his prime. I think Jack would have gone to Harry's body hard in this matchup, wearing Harry down...maybe even busting him up. Although I agree that Harry would have probably been ahead on points, Jack would have stopped him between rounds 7 and 12...in my opinion.
Ive said it before and Ill say it again. If Dempsey and his people thought he could beat Greb the fight would have been made. Its as simple as that. He had several offers from reputable promoters all over the country to make the fight and chose instead to face men that werent as good as Greb, that ducked Greb, or that Greb beat easily in one sided fashion.
Well now, given your extensive research on Greb for your forth coming tome,I should imagine you are best placed on this forum to hold forth on the abiliites of Harry Greb. Having said that, will you now make a prediction of the result should a prime Greb meet a prime Dempsey over 15rds? A prediction on which you have to bet your house.
I don't know about him, but I wouldn't bet a house on the outcome of this fight. I would go for $1000 on Dempsey, though. :good
I wouldnt bet my house on any fight but if Dempsey and Greb met in 1919 or 1920 which I believe was at or near both of their primes I would figure that Dempsey would have to stop him to win and I dont see that happening. If Dempsey doesnt get him in five the last ten rounds are going to be hell for him...
15 of you said Dempsey KO!!! Crazy talk, Greb would trouble Dempsey way more than Tunney ever did. The fact that the fight never happended after they sparred together tells you jusy how uncomfortable Dempsey was wiith the proposition of facing Greb for real. Greb was a freak of nature, similar to Lance armstrong. He would outpoint Dempsey everytime. The only way to beat a motivated and prime Greb was to match his pace and outbox him. I don't believe Jack could ever do that. He would not have been able to fight on the front foot let alone KO Harry and he knew it.:bbb
DEmpsey remains the only "heavyweight " great to go his whole career as champion ducking his two top challengers, Wills and Greb. Something stinks about this, period.
Way more than Tunney? Tunney won 19 out of 20 rounds! Is it even possible to dominate way more than that?
Look all we actually have to go is how their full force sparring went, their styles and Greb's record against heavyweights. I don't know who wins but it certainly appears to be a very competitive matchup. We also know he called Dempsey for years, even before Willard and Kearns never let it happen.
Dempsey TKO 2 Greb. This has all the makings of Foreman-Frazier written all over it. Greb will come right into Dempsey, and no 165lb man can survive that assault.
When did Greb "move right into" his opponents??? He was reknowned for his speed, defense, and ability to land punches without getting hit.
So now Genes beaten half blind Harrry in Cleveland in 1924 huh? Exactly where did you dream that up??
