I think he would do a lot better than people think.

The first Frazier Foreman fight is so indelably etched on peoples minds that they cannot conceive a fight between Foreman and any type of swarmer going any other way.

This is not necisarily an acurate assumption.

I think that Marciano fundamentaly matched up better against sluggers than Frazier. If you look at the Layne fight he basicaly won it by getting hit less than Layne and countering him where apropriate.

I also think that he was much stronger than Frazier physicaly and probably more durable.

So to answer the initial question of what Marciano can do he can employ the type of strategy that he used effectivley against Layne and Louis and hope that Foreman breaks first. It might be a bit of a long shot but it is not as improbable as people think.

Jerry Quarry was 6" flat and 200 lbs even for the Lyle fight and he owned Lyle......Lyle was overated as a banger I have seen him fight on numerous times

lol, 200 lb soaking wet Jerry Quarry didn't think much of Lyle's huge size and supposed power advantage. Ron Lyle never stopped anybody outside of an exhausted Shavers at the elite level, caught Foreman napping though.

Janitor you have a good boxing mind and a solid balance when measuring the various era's...sometimes the same strategy by a different man can make the difference

Marciano can only go all out & try to match fire with fire, but in the end, I think he hits the canvas numrerous times, before the ref stops it!

There's no other way Marciano can go about this one. He was not a boxer. Foreman was the same as Marciano, only stronger, more powerful & just as durable, if not more!

Still heavy handed 6'2" 213 lb Joe Louis brutalizing and knocking out the durable Savold a few months before the Marciano fight.

I got Louis vs. Cesar Brion on tape............ Louis was in-shape, but slow and grizzled............. At age 37, Louis clearly looked beyond his yrs..... However, yes, by then 211 to 213 pounds was pefect weight for Louis.....

    Good one.

Lyle if anything was overrated as a puncher. I see it you think his right hit harder than Frazier's left than?

    Good point.

Great post. I do think you make excellent points. I also think the Frazier-Foreman fight gets etched in peoples heads. As if that's the ultimate determiner for any smaller swarmer type of fighter.

Don't let Ali fans convince you that somehow Frazier vs Foreman somehow says anything about a Marciano-Foreman outcome. Prime joe Frazier's last fight was his first against Ali. Against Foreman, he put on 10 pounds and was clearly too fat and slow to cut the distance and stay close.

Marciano was always in shape, and had the best trainer of all time in Charley Goldman. Foreman needed distance to get leverage on his punches and hit with full power. Marciano would have stuck skin-close to Foreman, where George would have had no leverage. Marciano had short arms and would hit foreman all night with hooks and uppercuts, for a mid-fight KO.

Foreman had nowhere near the defensive skills of Marciano, who was a master at slipping the jab and closing in on his man. The only guy who could have beaten Marciano is Gene Tunney, but even he would have won 1 or 2 fights out of 5. Marciano is difficult to appreciate, since his unbeaten record allows for a lot of speculation. People basically invent flaws in him, since there are no visible ones.

    Blegh...this is quite a challlenge.

I'm caught between suggesting a patient, counter-punching strategy or one where Marciano goes all-out for a quick KO and hope it works.

The thing is, no matter what strategy Marciano brings, we'd find out very quickly if it's going to work or not. The biggest question right off the bat is: can Marciano take Big George's punches?
For me, everything hinges on that critical factor.
