Last night i told my friend who mosley is fighting next (he likes mosley) hes a very casual boxing fan, but starting to dig the sport more then he ever has... and i told him clottey, i told him him and cotto just fought a very very close fight, he asked if we could watch it, i told him ya we can watch it but were going to score it round by round,
so basically we took like 50 minutes watching that fight lol... we watched some rounds over just for the hell of it (i think the 10th was one) because some rounds it seemed totally dependant on what your looking for as to who you scored it for, some rounds were won big....

anyways, him and i differed on 1 round, cant remember which one.... but my friend came away liking clottey somewhat.
He had the fight at 6 rounds a piece, i have it 7-5 for Cotto.

anyways.... that being said, the past three weeks or so ive been showing my brother a lot of fights, a few being Cotto-Pinto, Cotto-Bailey, Cotto-Torres.... trying to get him into boxing, and since those fights were so fresh in my mind, watching the clottey fight, i noticed miguel throws more of an arm punch these days, he used to turn it over and totally rotate on his body punches, against clottey its almost like he was throwing more of an arm punch then putting his full body into it.

anyone notice that, or not at all?

Or you think thats just something he had to do against Clottey because hes now fighting bigger guys and doesnt want to stay in there to commit to the body? or is it that hes losing his technique a bit by not training for it like he should? something else?

or is it nothing at all?

but for real you should go watch the bailey fight, and some other younger fights and he would chop you in half to the body, not just go there more often, im not just talking about that, but the actual way he threw punches was differant in a way.

Cotto usually fights somewhat differently in most of his fights. He usually has a plan to adapt to that fighters style and counter it. Could be some effects of the Margo fight, but I think he was doing it due to Clotteys defense. Could be wrong, he could be a damaged fighter no longer the same. We'll see against Pac I guess.

you could be (and i hope in a way) your right.... but not sure why he would be doing it because of clotteys d, in fact the way clottey holds his guard cotto can get in a few good bodyshots on his sides as he usually is covering his face.

Plus Bailey hits harder then clottey with that right hand so it cant be that he doesnt want to get hit, as he opened up a can on bailey, pivoting in the pocket so to speak with his punches and getting full leverage, and not so much against clottey.

i hope to see a return to form against pac....

then again, part of me thinks im just nitpicking...

    It's about level of competition.

It's harder to land quality body punches against world class fighters. It increases the risk of getting countered as well.

    winner

Clottey actually keeps his elbows quite high too. I expect Mosley to punish him below those elbows

The problem is Clottey can take those body punches well.

The nasty cut didn't help as he maybe didn't commit due to not wanting to get hit in the cut anymore than he has to.

Only difference I've noticed in Cotto's punching is that his hands don't seem quite as fast as they were before the Margo beating. Other than that I don't have clue what you're talking about kirk.

well have you seen the bailey fight? the pinto fight?

would you say that he puts the same leverage onto his body shots that he did back then?

like i said, maybe im just seeing things... but to me hes not turning it over like he used to.

its not a huge deal... but it is just something i noticed.

    -----------

to the others who have responded to this thread... appreciate it, and i think you guys are probably right, its his level of competition, hes probably trying to get out of the 'pocket' so to speak without leaving himself open as much as he did at 140. :good

He is right. Cotto stopped throwing body punches. But that was before Margarito even. He didnt get after Mosley's body either.

IT IS about the quality of his opposition. But he should be getting better as well, and should still be able to go after the body. My feeling is that he doesnt go after the body anymore because he doesnt know how, he stopped progressing as a fighter in that skill.

IMHO, he needs to learn how to mask his body shots. Not every body shot needs to be a home run. In fact they cant be because thats how you get countered upstairs easily. As much as I dont like it, he needs to learn to clinch and throw like Hops used to, or throw and hold which would have done wonders against Margarito, or even push-off and throw like Floyd does with his elbows. These are very hard to defend against, almost impossible, and its basically fighting dirty, but very effective. He is physically stronger then most of his opponents so he should be able to win out in the clinches. He also needs to go more upstairs-downstairs combos.

He just needs to learn to do those things. Maybe his trainers are limited themselves. (Whoever it is now, I havent kept up with his family situation).
