Tipping the underdog..!

    How many of us have tipped an out and out underdog to overcome seemingly impossibe odds ? I had a strong feeling about Lloyd Honeyghan upsetting Donald Curry in 1986. As we all know,at the time Curry was regarded as the succesor to Sugar Ray Leonard and the heir apparent to Marvin Hagler as pound for pound best. Honeyghan had an unbeaten record,and was regarded as a good boxer/puncher but like any of Curry's opponents looked woefully out of his depth. In the lead up to the fight,I gave him a good chance of giving 'The Cobra' a good battle,but it was the day beforehand,when I read him giving an interview,which convinced me. Honeyghan seemed so confident and focused,he seemed like he could have whipped Godzilla ! I was out with two friends on the night of the fight,and when I told them that I'd put a bet on Honeyghan,they both suggested that I lay down in a darkened room until I felt better :lol: Lloyd won just the way that I predicted he would. How about all of you ? Been in a similar position ?

    I also had Hopkins over Tito.

    Holyfield and Williams over Tyson, too, but they were both heart in the mouth pics if i'm honest.

    Wright over Tito and Holyfield-Tyson II were both no brainers to me.

    I put a tenner on Holyfield to beat Tyson in their first bout.

    I picked Watson over Benn

    And was involved in the everyone who knows anything about boxing sting when Thaxton beat Scrap Iron Ryan.

    I also had some shockers:oops:

    How highly touted was Scrap Iron Ryan - and was Jono seen as a tough journeyman at the time?

    You should see my detailed, impashioned pick for Hatton over Pacquiao (TKO10). Fortunately, it was part of a post where I said exactly what would happen in Froch-Taylor, almost to a T, so I mostly got away with that one.

    Prior to the first Holyfield-Tyson I couldn't see how Holy could win, it seemed a terrible style match up for him but after the fight he'd beaten Tyson so comprehensively on every level, mentally, physically, heart etc. I knew there was no way Tyson was going to win the rematch. Easy money at 4/1.

    Yep, I got 4/1 on Holy at a bookies in Tenerife, I'm not sure what the official 'Vegas' line was.

    Well **** me. I always fancied Holyfield for the first fight but never put my money where my mouth was, don't know what the odds where for that. I think I got 13/2 when Williams beat him.

    You're going to love this....Holyfield was around 24/1 in the UK for the first fight.:D

    That's just ****ing crazy.

    I guess a lot of it is hindsight, but the only way I'd make Mike a favourite against Evander is with a baseball bat.

    I remember thinking that Holyfield would win, but my grandad refused to put the bet on for me.

    one of the reasons I never betted was cos I'd previously got the gambling bug with the horses so I was on the wagon as it were. If I had of had money on the first fight it probably would of cost me in the long run so no regrets. lol
