:huh Umm ...Im not very familiar with this boxer at all,all I know is that he was a Light-heavyweight champion a long time and from what I read everyone claims Roy Jones Jr was running from him..Can someone please fill me in about this fighter Was his record great? {names,wins,losses etc} Was he a excellent fighter? Did he have speed or power? Is he a hall of famer calibar fighter? Will he be remebered as an ATG? Was Roy Jones Jr really running from him {Your Opinion} And Finally would he have beaten Roy Jones Jr if they met back then? :good I appreciate your time
Record is OK.Most notable win was against Virgil Hill for THE LHW Championship unifying the WBO WBA and IBF only to get raped by the ABC's and have 2 of those 3 titles stripped.The rest of his resume is weak to OK IMO.A bunch of WBO title defenses.he did however win a WBO CW title bit didnt stick around. He was a very good fighter with a POWER jab that would bust up opponents faces.He had KO power in both hands.He was a walk you down type fighter.Take a punch to give a punch. He is IMO HOF worthy. He will not be remembered as and ATG and rightfully so. I wouldnt say Roy ran from him since both never left there backyards but i will say that Roy would walk into fights drapped from head to toe with belts that were never rightfully lost in the ring.He vacated his WBC and was handed it back by the WBC in a shamefull move in which they were sued and nearly went bankrupt over.The IBF and WBA again were stripped from DM after he won by beating Hill.Roy fought for those vacated titles all the while DM had still yet to lose. You can look at it 2 ways...DM could have chased the belts that were stipped from him(which would be BS)or RJJ could have fought the guy they were stipped from.DM was the lineal champ while Roy paraded around with 50 belts!
Roy never ran from Darius. Darius was making millions defending the WBO against cans in Germany infront of milllions. Neither fighter needed each other but Jones was definitly the superior fighter. Dariusz had a very opportune career. I remember when he lost his belt to Gonzalez he was pretty much a shadow of himself by then but still should have had enough to beat a guy like Gonzalez. Jones on the other hand stood Gonzalez on his head.
DM was a native Pole that left neighboring Germany to fight 2 times.In his 8th pro fight,he fought in Portugal and much later,fought in his native Poland.Neither DM nor Jones had any desire to leave their backyards-making a match between them impossible,but Jones had spent his whole career saying he wouldn't leave US to fight,not trusting foreign judges after getting jobbed in the '88 Olympics.Obviously,he didn't duck DM.I firmly believe that DM didn't duck Roy either,but like Roy,just wouldn't leave home.Common opponents include-beside aforementioned Gonzalez-Montell Griffin.In their 1st fight,Roy was disqualified in the 9th for hitting while Griffin was on the deck.In their 2nd,Roy stopped Montell in one.2 years later,DM stopped Griffin in four.Virgil Hill was the other common.DM won a 12 round decision.In Hill's next fight,Roy stopped him with a body shot in four.In my opinion,Roy's sublime footspeed-nonexistent for the past 6 years-would have kept Roy out of DM's power range and Roy would have won a unanimous decision.Besides,Roy convincingly beat James Toney who is better than anyone Darius ever fought.
Decent world class fighter but not elite. Jones would've handled him comfortably but with maybe a few problems on the way. Hill was a good fighter but DM battered him in a really impressive performance. Excellent left hand. Don't know who's to blame for a fight with Jones never happening but its shamefull that it never took place.
This is true to a degree...DM and his promoters need Jones in the sense that they used the chance of fighting Jones as a war cry, and the big banana being hand in front of the 500pound gorilla. As long as the German fight fans felt that DM was trying to get a fight with Jones they would keep putting up thier hard earned Deutsche Marks to watch him fight bum after bum with the end of every fight them saying that the NEXT fight would be the big fight, and that they were chasing Jones... On Jones' behalf he truely never thought highly of DM, and was once quoted as saying he would make DM look just like the the rest of the guys he was fighting then people would be calling him a bum too. Which was very true. I think in the end DM was better off for not having fought Jones, while it did to a larger degree hurt Jones by not fighting DM.
DM fighting and beating Hill is what ultimately lead to Jones finally fighting Hill. He beat Hill, but prior to that some where saying that Jones was avoiding a fight with Hill.
I like how people are pointing out how Dariusz faced bums while coveniently leaving out the fact that Roy Jones faced his share of guys who had no business being in the ring with him. Now granted, Roy's resume is obviously superior but let's not go saying that the Tiger faced bum after bum. He beat some pretty good fighters over the years. Maybe not household names in America but solid fighters nonetheless.
Come on man, DM avoided the guys that you calling bums on Jones' resume. DelValle, Telesco, Harding were all in line for fights with DM but were turned away....Delvalle was once quoted as saying, "Im not going to chase a fight with a guy that isnt going to fight me.
