even though the belts were stripped from DM, it not like RJJ picked up out of the garbage and started wearing them.
After DM was stripped the titles were vacated, Roy fought for titles that were vacated..

To this date, poeple are holding against RJ that he did not fight DM.

DM was like 45-0 and a long term champ, he beat the man and WBA/IBF champ in the LH division, Virgil Hill who had not loss since the Hearns fight. DM also beat Montell Griffin and notable opponents such as Hall, Rochigani and Barber.

I am not a fan of DM but for some years those 2 were clearly the two best LH in the world, yet they never fought.

 

Actually, fighting out of Germany was not his backyard. Poland was his backyard. And it's not as if Jones was out of Montreal & fighting in America.
The other thing is that a foreign guy has to go out and beat the nations best fighter and convert fans to his side. Hardly an easy thing to do. Dariusz did this and Rochhigiani was no easy guy to beat at the time, in Germany. His victory over a hot fighter at the time--Leeonzer Barber--was a real good fight and it's a bout that seldom gets mentioned. But Barber was a handful at that time & a real nice scalp to have.

 

Actually, Germany was his backyard. He was promoted by the corrupt German promoter K-P Kohl and got protected by him (see first Rocky fight).

Anyway, DM's oppsition was decent (Hill,Griffin, Barber, Rocky). He had a right to dispute RJ's claim as the light heavyweight king. RJ should have definitely fought him and may have ducked him.

 

after i saw his fights against tiozzo and hill.
and remeber seeing hill's fight vs. roy or at least the KO.
and remember that michalczewski was outpointed by the untalented though big and tough julio cesar gonzalez , and knowing that hill had tiozzo's number.
i think roy would have frustrated and beaten him somehow also.
don't know if stoppage or points.

 

DM was past his prime against Gonzales. DM was at his best against Rocky II and Hill. Back then, everybody was screaming for the fight to made.

 

After watching watching Roy vs Glen and Roy vs Tarver.....if we are going to use DM's final 2 fights as an example lets use some of Roy's low points.

It is comical when people say DM lost to Gonzalez and Roy beat him and there is where you will find your answer as to who would win.

 

Definitely DM was not weaker puncher than Traver and weaker pressure fighter than Johnson.
Probably DM was a combination of both Tarver and Johnson ...
so prime for prime it could be 50/50 for either DM KO Jones or Jones KO/UD DM.
One strong point of DM is taht he was getting stringer in the later rounds.

 

DM was making more money than Jones by fighting in Germany.

Jones when he did not have a title...Griffith had it...offered to fight DM for 4 million dollars. No one in Germany ever heard of Jones...no ****. He was not a German Olympic team member who finished second.... All he was a 1/4 champ at middle, a 1/4 champ at Super middle and an ex 1/4th champ at Lt. Heavy, then.
Hill was a name, when he came and Beat Maske...Jones was not a world wide name...no BS. Jones could have walked down any street in Germany and no a single person would have asked him for an autograph....DM of course being the Champ was always giving out autographs.

Hill had gotten $2 mill in Germany which was the most ever paid out until then.
So Jones was just doing his hot air thing, like when he wanted $25 mill to fight Lennox.
But he'd heard of DM and was "willing" to fight in Germany....or so he said....

Then.....It was Jones who had in his HBO contract that they could not mention DM's name.
So that is why none of you know him.....
It was not DM who made that contract....it was Jones.


I think it was Harmon, who said, Jones was more athletic, but DM hit harder. DM had all the weapons...
Against Hill though he cheated...he had some defence for the first time, that he seldom used afterwards, and walked Hill down. Hill should have gotten on the Bike in round 5 not round 8.

DM said he'd fight Jones anywhere and for 50%...Jones wanted 70%.
Jones wanted no part of DM...DM was a pressure fighter like Glenco Johnson, but with more talent and a harder punch.


I actually thought he was going to beat Gonzales in he easily won the first two rounds....and it was a tight fight. He was past his prime and having booze problems...still does. He was the type that needed to be pounded war, so most of the time he lost the first two rounds.

Styles make the fight....and DM was a tad bigger with a tad more reach, and threw straight punches, and had a hell of a jab, good hook, good cross, good upper cuts.
Offensive weapons DM was the best of his generation...

Jones may have been faster, however, Jones mugged and clowned taking his air breaks all the time. Getting away with it because his opponents were asking what is Jones going to do next.
DM would not have been worried about that no more than Glenco was....

Jones would not have gotten his air breaks, with DM in his face, three minutes every round.
The question is was Holm's jab in the same class as DM's? A definate maybe...DM's jab was one of the best I've seen in 50 of watching fights.

Yeah good post until you throw in a curve ball with Griffin UD Toney and Thadzi MD Toney...how did DM fair against those guys?

So much made up and false information in this posts its unreal....DM's name was bought up in about half of Jones fights on HBO, so if it was in his contract that they not bring it up then Jones should have grounds for a lawsuit??? That is flat out bull****, more of the crap that the German public bought at full price.

Secondly it hard to think that a fighter that was the P4p king of boxing was unknown to BOXING FANS in Germany..

Third, Hill made his biggest payday of his boxing career in 1991 when he and Thomas Hearns split 50/50 a 7.5 million dollor purse.

The only offer that DM every made to Jones was 5 million dollars with the WBO being the overseeing group in Germany...Jones was making 6 million per fight in the US so why would he go to Germany to fight DM for less money...
