Will Chad Dawson one day be as great as Joe Calzaghe?

Considering NO one even knows who Joe is in the USA that isn't much of an accolade. If you're talking about talent, resume/comp faced, and skill he is already better than Joe.

Well Calzaghe is not great...so no Dawson wont be nothing like Calzaghe....Dawson/calzaghe are 2 different fighters...Dawson actually has "guts" by giving Glen Johnson a rematch, the man who gave Dawson the toughest match of his career,I applaud him for agreeing to fight Johnson again and not pulling out of a fight with him "3 times"......

Chad Dawson is not as good as Calzaghe. Calzaghe was on another level.

Yes he does have a chance. Only difference is Dawson fought 29 times only and already has guys like Tarverx2, Johnsonx2(second fight incoming), Adamek and Harding on his record and aims to add more big names.

Calzaghe had Eubank, Sheika and Reid on his resume in his first 29.

And Eubank was a past peak fighter forced to weight cut (in a couple weeks) while in final prep for a 175 lb fight in which young Joe struggled mightily and was rocked as the fight ended (should have been a draw or a narrow Eubank decision as Joe landed little cleanly after about the 4th).

Sheika was ripped off with a bull **** ref stoppage (as Joe was so often the beneficiary in his career) on a cut in what was becoming a pretty good fight in the fifth and showing the potential for a very competitive second half (and no rematch was offered or considered).

Reid was arguably a draw in another fight (of dozens in Joe's career) that Joe looked merely in the same class as his opposition (no more no less).

Joe also struggled with David Starie and looked rather average versus Thornberry.

A fighter who went directly (backwards) from a struggle with a far past peak Eubank to claim the vacant WBO to then defend against friggin' Sobot and Ferreyra.

Comparatively at this point in their careers, Dawson is undoubtedly far, far above the friend of the man from Del Monte.

And, as far as any American fighter is concerned, there still isn't anyone who even knows who Joe is in the states. Lennox is recognizable. A few know Hatton. No sport fans would even have a clue to Joe's career or profession. If his name was on a questionnaire and the options were boxer, pizza chef, or Indian chief, pizza chef would undoubtedly win the day. Sad but true. You can't come over and fight a couple 40+ year olds AND struggle mightily and expect to make any kind of favorable impression. Much too little and too late. Of course, he could have come over and knocked out Chad Dawson and made an impression (except Joe has never knocked out anyone - uncontroversially (always ref assisted)). He never would have had a prayer of looking good against Dawson so he smartly retired.

Joe C. has turned himself into a great fighter, but it should be noted that he hasn't always faced the best competition. Dawson is on his was to being a great fighter, and he will most likely surpass Calzaghe's resume in a few years. If he cleans up the LH division, he could consider himself on par with Calslappy. Losses don't make one fighter better than the other.

I think Chad will be greater than Calzaghe but he'll take a couple L's along the way due to fighting way better competition (even though it's arguable that he already has fought better comp).

Can't disagree with anything there, that's the way I see it too regarding Joe's career.

I think you will agree when I say that he wouldn't have unified if Lacy and Kessler didn't CONSTANTLY ask for the fight and made the flight with their belts. He has been champion for so long yet never considered unifying, that explains his SMW "reign".

People like to **** on Lacy yet if it wasn't for him making the flight you think Calzaghe would have gotten the recognition he FINALLY got after that fight?, **** no. He would have rematched Kebabi Salem or whoever.

For such a talented fighter he has a TERRIBLE resume. When Jones was prime he thought it makes no sense to fly and make the fight and wanted Jones to come to Wales instead because he considers his self the "man" for beating a past it Eubank in comparison to Jones who beat a prime James Toney. Yet when Jones is BEYOND SHOT it made sense to fly to America with the Lineal title for two old men to quickly pad his record on his way out. Froch said it best when he admitted RJJ would wipe the floor with Calzaghe in his prime, one-sided or late TKO.

Dawson only fights over the hill fighters, and even then struggles, he is no Calzaghe, and never will be.

Calzaghe is a once in a life time athlete, a true great representation of the sweet science.

LOL at anyone trying to run down Dawson for fighting guys who are past their best while praising Calzaghe.

If you're going to bring up Hopkins, then you must rate the ''green'' Hopkins, because the Hopkins Calzaghe fought did a number on America's brightest prospect and unified MW king, not only that, he was p4p 3... what about Tarver and Johnson?

    The end.
