How long had you been training before your first amatuer fight?

when i said did you keep it up i meant fighting not a love for boxing, alot of fans will watch a sport and not participate, especially if they had a bad experiance.

Glad to see you did though.

Ive been training for about 4 months, looking at having first fight in 2 months, So with just under 6 months training. Do you guy's think this is too early? iv'e done sparring with blokes with fight experience from other gym's and done well, i'm not 100% confident with footwork or slipping punches yet though and am 3 kg's over fight weight, also atm my fitness isn't 100% (though fitter than most in gym haha), but in 2 months my fitness will be up to scratch.

Opinions? did people that fought early regret it? is it worth waiting?

Can you defend yourself against a burst of punches. If the answers no, wait until you can. Most shoddy trainers work on only attack before you fight you need a D. If you haven't got one then get that before you fight otherwise all you will have is attack and run away. Attack and run away isn't enough unless you are an 11 year old kid with time on your side who isn't going to get hurt. If your approaching mansize you need to be able to defend single punches, combinations and flurries without having to think about it.

Boxing is about not getting hit. Sounds boring but its required. Ask your trainer about it- if he says that your attack will be your defence then he's a ******.

I can defend flurries of punches but have a real hard time slipping and ducking punches. I don't get hit a lot sparring but like i said, i have trouble making them miss as such and countering. I might just wait till I'm more confident making them miss and letting combo's go in return.

boxed to get fit after breaking my leg playing football...physio was a boxer and he taught me how to box year and a bit later went to the uni gym had my first fight scheduled for december 07....but broke my leg again playing football had two operations on my leg gave up football and focussed on boxing

by september 08 i was now fully able to train anyway i wanted (eg before sept my leg was too sore to run on etc) so from september 08 was training with the uni and had my first fight in the december 08 but was about october that the serious work started.....i won my first fight in 12secs landing only 2 punches....a jab and a right hook and it was lights out for my opponent, the fight was in a tournament....scottish uni boxing championships so had another fight the same day which i won on points....also scored a knock down after 10secs

i felt for my first fight i wasn't as fit as i should of been....nerves took alot of energy outta me aswell but i won the 2 fights and the tournament and at my next fight i was 100 x fitter and for my fight in nov this year i'll be 100x fitter than the last time

I trained for 3 months, Dropped from 170 to 143 in that period. My first bouts were a amateur tournament and I had 4 fights that weekend.

I won the tournament. My last opponent I think had 5 fights? something like that.

I trained like a madman with my coach who was doing all kinds of defensive drills and counters. That was pretty much my game, block and throw block and throw. Move position jab cross head movement jab jab move.

god it was repetitive but helpful.

Interesting to note that my first fights were so easy, my opponents came out like they were brawlers and just threw. When your a amateur in your first fights remain calm and cool.

i'd been training for 8 months before my first fight, which was in march 1978.
before that i'd had no-shows and just turning up hoping an opponent could be found.
just like brampton i weighed 10st 3lbs but it was put down at 10st 6lb,which i didn't query.
as for the fight ,i lost by a majority decision, which got a chorus of boos.
i fought again that week and dropped another decision, which was fair.
two weeks later i had another 2 fights which i won and just before(or after ,i can't recall)
the second of these, my debut opponent was there and told me i'd broken his nose and hadn't been able to fight since.
the subject of weights came up and he told me he'd weighed 10st 9lbs which was a lesson learned,or should have been.
    i had a lot more contests,but i'll never forget my 1st

just under a month. i had my first fight the day after my 18th birthday. it lasted 45 seconds and i won. i had my next two the next two weekends after that. so i had my first 3 a month and a half into boxing. I had been in extremely good shape from cross country though and i had raphael buttler helping train me. i don't think you can ask for better help as an ammature than to have professionals help train you

    4 years. (7 - 11 years old) It was at light-weight and i won.

My grandad was in my corner and his advice was to get in close and hit him on the chin :D i did and won but he played down the win like it was normal, just another fight. a 'well done son' and that was it. i dont think we ever talked about it again.

Not sure about the exact dates and times. I started somewhere boxing in 2005, after my father was killed in a robbery. I was fat and out of shape (worked in my fathers pub for months), and mentally a complete mess. I trained because that was the only thing that could clear my head a little, but I only did bag work. Got in better shape, and after a while I also started following the technical workouts. Sparred a lot, but since I was already over 30 years by then I had no intention of ever fighting. I was told 30 was the maximum age for amateur fighting. One of the people on this board (I think it was avk47) told me it was actually 35, so I reconsidered and had my first fight at age 32, last April. Lost on points (see link below), many disagreed but the most important thing to me was that I didn't embarrass anyone and proved to myself that I could do it. More were planned, but I got injured two weeks after that, when I was in the best shape of my life. It healed again, and I hope to fight again in three weeks.
