Has one of the better resumes of all time (on a name basis, disregarding win/loss) so the term cherry picker has no business being mentioned anywhere near his name. Cherrypickers don't fight guys like Trinidad and Hopkins in their prime. Anglosaxon is certainly a Grade A windup artist.
Other than his losses to Pac and Hopkins, all of his losses could have gone either way against other future ATGs. Oscar fought the best out there.
I haven't divulged my opinion yet..... I will say just about all the names on his resume are either shot, or hype jobs themselves. The truly live fighters beat him within an inch of his life.
So facing Chavez in the first fight, Whitaker, Quartey, Vargas were not big fights? Oh i get it those 3 out of 4 were so called shot fighters right?
De La Hoya did not lose all of his big fights. It just so happens that all of his losses WERE big fights. On top of that, HE is the reason they were big fights in the first place. He went through his career being constantly called out by everybody and their mother. He ducked nobody (he couldn't possibly live long enough to fight every challenger, and their mother) and rose up to many challenges. He had no business at 160, but he was actually an entertainer who saw nothing entertaining for the fans at 154. He won the WBO belt within a year and a half into his pro career. He broke Mexico's heart by easily picking apart Chavez, twice. He won (I think he lost this one though) against hall of famer and all-time great Pernell Whitaker. I think he won the second Mosley fight. He clowned Vargas, Mayorga, so many others who all talked the same pre-fight crap. And contradictory to what the rest of the world thinks, I thought he had a well planned, tactical performance against Mayweather Jr. The accalades go on and on. The hype was deserved.
This is going to **** people off here....but I think Mike Tyson is the biggest hype job in the past 20 years. Now remember, that only includes from 1989 on!
I don't know where he ranks in hype jobs, but Francisco Bojado was a big hype job. He was being hyped and televized his first few fights and suppose to be better than Cotto. Shame he never materialized toa world champion.
None of the choices in the poll apply to what Oscar was. I think he was an immensely talented fighter who came up short nearly every single time he fought a huge name. While he may have better fighters on his resume, than Floyd Mayweather, at least Floyd didn't lose to the ones he has - and in all honesty, Oscar hasn't fought that many more big names than Floyd. De La Hoya was always a fighter I liked, and I wouldn't call him overhyped, because he did great things for the sport of boxing, but he was a bit overrated.
