Can Vitali Klitschko retain his belt until he's 40?

As far as I remember, there has never been a heavyweight champion who carried his championship belt with multiple defenses to age 40 without losing his title to someone along the way.

Vitali is 38 now. If he defeats Arreloa, he's likely 2-4 fights away from reaching 40 with his belt intact. Such a feat would stand alone in the history of heavyweight boxing.

Can he do it? Vitali looked a little slower in his training clips, but its hard to tell if he was trying to impress the cameras or focus on accuracy and his game plan.

If he fights as often as he does now ,its quite possible.
But what do you mean by multiple defences?
Vitali won the WBC title from Sam Peter on the 11th of Oct 2008,he has defended it once against Gomez,on 26th of Sept 2009.
He is due to defend against Arreola on the 27th of this month.
If he wins ,which unless he has gone back considerably [which could be the case at his age], I think he is more than likely to do ,he willl have defended the title twice in a year, respectable but hardly multiple.
If Vitali continues to defend against the calibre he has done so far I think he might still be champion when he is 50, that said I give him some leeway because the quality in the division is woeful.
Arreola is a fat slob who stands in front of you ,he has zero head movement , and slow feet, and he has been dropped and badly shaken by right hands . Because Arreola is slow and lacking in defence he will be a sitting target for Vitali's telescopic jab and his best punch his right cross.
The only chance Arreola has ,is if Vitali has deteriorated enough for him to land one of his big swings, reports of the training he has done suggest he is as overweight as ever, never a dedicated trainer ,he cannot even motivate himself for a crack at the title.
One thing about the brothers Grim ,they are allways in shape.
The Klits are currently the best of a very sorry bunch, which is not their fault, but will appreciably detract from their legacy, imo.
What has Arreola done to merit a title shot? Beaten a Fat McCline ,who came back for a pay day.
This is really a non -event.the Mayweather Marquez fight is something worth anticipating, but this is not.
Vitali wins inside the distance, this will be Vitali v Danny Williams ,except it won't last as long.

For me, with any upcoming Vitali fight, my only question is "how much will he have left at this point?", because in top condition, i'd pick him to beat anyone in the division, except for his brother.

I think he slowed down significantly during his last two bouts, and father time will catch up with him soon. Arreola might be the one to do it.

i agree he is slowing down but even so the quality is so poor at the moment he should still be champ at forty. arreola is not good enough to beat vitali

Vitali has a style that could allow him to do it given the current divison. Hes tall, fights tall and at distance. There are no Lennox Lewis' out there that know how to offset his style, so he has a very good chance. Arreola is raw and defensively challenged, so hes going to have to walk through a lot of fire to eventually wear Vitali down.
For the first time Im actually looking forward to a Klitschko fight. I think Arreola has the right mindset, so it should be interesting as long as it lasts. I could see Vitali scoring a early to mid round KO too.

Well the division is weak but if he faces 1 of the top young contenders (Haye/Povetkin) he may come unstuck

I reckon, that unless a young quality heavy comes along,Vitali could well be champion by the time he reaches the big 40. The Klitsckos may not reach the higher echelons of all time great lists, but are miles better than anyone else around, currently.

I think everyone here has pretty much touched upon most of the relevant points. What it basically boils down to is WHO he continues to fight. I don't see Arreola being his conqueror, and probably not Haye either. In another two years, he may be vulnerable to a slick mover such as an Eddie Chambers or someone similar. Right now I think he holds on to the WBC belt, especially with the current line-up that he's been signing with...

What do you mean if? Of course he's gonna defeat Arreloa. For heavens sake it's bad enough a guy like that fights for the tittle if he was to win it heavyweight boxing would reach an all time low. I disslike the K.brothers but unfortunatly they are the best we got right now and they are surely above bum's like Arreloa. I expect an easy KO win for Vitali and yes, he will retain the tittle until he's 40. Unless LL decides to make a comeback. :rofl

Styles make fights..... V.K. looked offbeat a bit against Gomez because he was slick and a southpaw......... This vato Arreola is a bulldozer who heads straight in........... Klit will KO his ass quick and hard due to Arreola's limited ability to box and slip punches....... Arreola will then take his check and pull a "Houdini" rountine and vanish from the scene until he himself is broke....... I've seen it all before.....

I could see it ending that way, but I could also see Arreola pressing on and making Vitali uncomfortable, which could make the second half of the fight interesting if he makes it that far. Thats what Im hoping for, sort of a Wladmir Brewster type of fight.

    Can he do it?

In the curent climate I would have to say yes.

Against the curent crop I can see verry few avenues for him coming unstuck and he dosn't seem to be heading down any of them.

Yeah I think he would be able to pull it off. Haye would be a good fight for him after Arreola but Haye's chin wouldn't make it through the fight. And that's assuming he'd accept the fight and now run away like he has in the past.
