I'm becoming fascinated with Carlos Monzon

I agree that Monzon is a facinating figure and one that there is a real scarcity of quality material on ... it is very frustrating .. by all accounts he was a very hard, street guy and that never left him. Straight through his championship reign he wqas still getting arrested for street fights. He was a pimp as well. He was arrested over fifty times in his life, many post title victory.

At the few boxing writers dinners he attended American writers told stories of how he spoke to no one but some of the other fighters, literally glaring at the rest. He was a violent man straight through. Monzon's icy demeanor in the ring to me always reflected that like a Liston, he was a true man of the dark side and did not need or feed on playing to the crowd. He went about his business like a hitman.

The only way a true biography of this man will be of any value is if it is written by an Argentinian who knows the land and the culture. Monzon, like Duran, stayed very close to his own. He was a very closed book.

 

Thanks for thr compliment Fists of Fury...and funny you should mention Richard Ramirez...I was in a book store yesterday afternoon and saw a book with Ramirez on the cover, and I thoght.."wow, he looks like Monzon!!" (lol)...of course Monzon could have made a sock puppet out of Ramirez.

Yeah, perfect term.....it's also my term for Bob Foster among the lightheavyweights, but the same could be said for Monzon and the middles. Same cold patience, even more so than Foster, though Foster frontlined more ko power, Monzon was even more relentless in that cold, reptilian way about him. Almost like a constrictor. Animal analogies have always been used..coyotes, panthers, lions, leopards, tigers, well reptiles and preying mantis's work for Monzon.
