For all the hype about how badly was robbed of his title in 1967 and his huge victory over Foreman in 74 to win it back, little is made about how pathetic Ali treated his title in the ring during his second reign. He consistantly came into the ring flabby and rarely gave 100% effort. It was truly not impressive or admirable. I'm talking up to Shavers when after he fell apart all together .. Wepner - Ali was flabby and looked so-so against a jouneyman. Lyle - The man did next to nothing for ten rounds and was extremely boring. Bugner - very boring, so-so performance. Frazier - the one big fight in this reign Coopmann - a joke against a joke Young - a fight he was horribly fat and lost. Dunn - another joke Norton - a fight he clearly lost. Evangelista - a horrible bore. Shavers - a gutty performance. Overall a c plus at best reign.
Yeah, but that list right there still compares with former dudes like "Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano & Frazier's" title reigns beforehand....:deal MR.BILL
He should've lost this one as well. I agree, Ali became something of a fraud after the Foreman win. Won several questionable, if not outright bad decisions against the few dangerous challengers he fought, and most of his legit wins were against guys who didn't belong in a title fight.
I don't know about that. And those guys weren't getting one crooked decision after another to extend their reigns.
I love the tits on the broad in the Avatar....... They bring tears to my eyes like an onion.........:nut "Questionable Decisions?" That is all a matter of opinion........ These type of decisions have gone on for over 100 yrs and they carry on from here, as well.... I thought "Ali-Norton 3" was a legit draw..... And inspite of Shavers rocking Ali 2X in their '77 fight in New York, I still feel Ali edged Shavers in the end on points....... So, in my book, I am still impressed with Ali's second reign from '74 thru 1978...... MR.BILL
For the most part, I disagree with HE Grant's argument about Ali's second reign. Yes, it's true that Ali defended his title against some bums, and sometimes he was horribly out of shape. Nonetheless, Ali beat numerous top contenders during his second reign, and he won a classic bout against Frazier.
In truth, in all of Ali's title fights, he really only fought about 5 or 6 sorry-ass mothers....... The rest of the challengers were either good to great......... Ali's comp is TOP-NOTCH on a overall basis........ Peace... MR.BILL
I don't think its been made to be a big deal because it's obvious. I also think in a way it's a testament to how great he was to fight for as long as he did and still get some noteworthy wins and some close fights (Even in losses). It's what he did in his prime, The Foreman and the Frazier fights that solidify his legend. Redeeming the first Norton loss and regaining the title a 3rd time where helps but his second title reign is a little bonus with the good, the bad, and the ugly.
It can be argued until some of us are blue in the face, but Ali's 2nd reign was still far superior than the reigns of "Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey & Tunney." Whether or not people wanna cry that Ali got a few gifts against dudes like "Norton, Young and Shavers," he still went 15 rds and kept the fights close enough to get a controversial decision........ I can't knock Ali there........... The man was great......... MR.BILL
I saw the Young fight a while ago. I didn't score it but the fight itself was quite a question mark, Ali gave like the first two rounds away for free, but to me I didn't get Young's gameplan at all, he didn't look like he was in a fight, more like an exhibition. I don't think Ali was given a gift in this fight. I think he was just making so much money no matter who or where he fought that he tried to do it as often as possible.
after manila most would have liked ali to stop, they knew he wasn't the same fighter anymore and going downhill fast. his legacy was cemented by manila - after that more were impressed by his toughness and will to win e.g. Shavers. but fights against jimmy young (only fight i've never watched from Ali in the 70s cuz my dvd collection disc was faulty) and his last 3 fights and losses to spinks, holmes and berbick doesn't help his legacy.
Lyle, Norton, Young and Shavers were top guys. Ali might be 1-3 in these fights. Bugner was boring, but he was decent. The Cooperman fight was a cult classic. Cooperman had no business being in the ring, and his corner started to mix in liquor to dull the beating he was taking. Ali's 3rd act after the Foreman fight was more about the show. Ali pre-fight antics were up to par, but his ring performances were not.
