This was the fight scored up until the 12th. Cooney had 3 points deducted.. If there was no point deductions the score would of been 114-113 Cooney on two guys scorecards meaning he was winning more rounds.. :rofl

Judge Jerry Roth was on target with his 115 to 109 card........ The other two notable judges were stroking their cocks to Cooney way too hard...... Overall, Cooney handled himself well and fought like a true challenger against Holmes in 1982, but by round 11, Cooney was being outboxed and fatigued..... This fight of 1982 was a great heavyweight title fight for the 80s....... I still review it every now and then over a few beers and a bong toke......

This fight was a big deal at the time. And Cooney was a wasted talent. If he had focused after Holmes he could have been very successful, but he self-destructed.

My gripe with Cooney and him losing focus was the result of the 10 million dollar check he grossed from the Holmes fight / loss......... The money spoiled him early on.... Christ, Cooney grossed a cool million by smoking Norton in 53 seconds in 1981 at MSG........ Cooney was being paid well, so he could afford to slack off and be inactive while most of typical America had top go to work five days a week.......

You know why poor Jerry Quarry kept active after suffering wicked losses to Frazier and Ali, because he still needed to make money....... Quarry was paid damn well for some of them fights, but not enough to retire on and be set for life..... Quarry had to fight to pay the bills........

Cooney was the great white hope. And after losing to Holmes and making a fortune, he discovered the great white line. Again, a wasted talent.

The mid 80s was prime time Coke scene across the USA....... Christ, Miami Vice was on TV pumping that **** big time....... By 1985, the average worker was able to score a gram or so on Friday night and whiff away the night...... Cooney being a part time fighter and a full time millionaire liked to powder his nose during that time frame.......... Hey, I did too........ However, I was no millionaire........

Cooney was the Mavrovic or Michael Grant of the Holmes' era.

This is one of the rare times when you and I agree. It was total bull**** the way Holmes was treated start to finish. Holmes was a great figther with great skills, and his competitition is not nearly so bad as they say. Guys like Norton, Witherspoon, and Shaver may not be remembered as great fighters, but they were notable and in the top 100 somewhere, not far below the Kilts.

Cooney, sadly, had the ability to go on to great things and be rememberee as a real signature fight. He didn't do it because he was a a drug addict, an alcoholic, and an emotionally damaged person. No judgement here, he was real messed up in the head from being an abused child.

If Cooney and Holmes would have fought a hundred times, I'd have picked Holmes a hundred times regardless. But I think if Cooney would have mixed in a few Ossie Occasio types in between those quick blow outs, it would have been an even better fight, which only would have enhanced Holmes all the more.

But again, to the original point, yeah, that scoring is bull****.

32,000 people watched the fight in a custom built arena in the Caesar's Palace parking lot. The last of an era for American fight fans it has not been duplicated since and probably won't be.
