Watt is the best analyst on telly. Bar none. I'd love to see Ken Buchanan get a crack of the whip but he needs to get the **** out of Wetherspoon's first.
The only Sky pundit that I don't mind is McCrory. Nelson and Piper are woeful, yes men - who will dredge to the bottom of the barrel in order to find a 'positive'. I can't agree with what some of you are saying about Thaxton's TV work, I think it might be down to that weird clip he did for ITV4 a while ago when he came across as a confused presenter/boxer reporting on himself. Excruciating. McGuigan is a reliable and impressive commentator, who normally gives fair analysis and is articulate. I like Woodhall too. I used to like Watt, but I am now sick of his commentary. The Americans **** over the Brits for boxing commentary, they are opinionated, disagree with one another without hesitation and really break down the strengths and weaknesses of the fighters and quickly spot emerging flaws of a fighter during the fight. The Sky commentators seemingly latch onto a cliche or thought and repeat it over and over and over, whilst the other one agrees. Probably the real problem is editorial constraint from the sky bosses.
Sorry to snip you post but I think this is the most important difference between UK and American commentary. If you have a 3 man commentary team and they have different opinons that they arn't afraid to voice then its got to be a good thing and it creates debate.:good
They were both abysmal last night. Completely biased towards McDermott but thats not suprising as Fury is an ITV fighter.
Surely debate is the whole point of having a panel! Sky may as well save on the salaries and just have a pair of those Churchill nodding dogs Lampley is a much better lead than anybody Sky have ever had - it all starts from there.
What? You don't like Jim Nealy? I must be reminiscing about the coverage of the McGuigan and Tyson fights:good
3 man commentary teams is an excellent point, it works for the yanks coverage, we should try it out over here.
Maybe the 2 man 'system' is too cosy, it must be easy to fall in to the trap of coming to an agreement over how the fight is going esp. if one of the guys is an ex-world champ, maybe the 'other' guy could feel a little intimidated (for want of a better word) into agreeing if he'd never fought at a decent level?
Yep, you can see how that might happen. I noticed when Foreman was doing commentary with the HBO guys he used to keep in check some of his co-commentators.
I think the best commentary team is Lampley, Merchant and Steward. Some of the Showtime guys might be better, I don't know. We could have Darke - who is good, alongside a Woodhall type and someone else. It's all about getting the right blend. Woodhall is much better commentating on pro boxing than amateurs - he spends too much time moaning about the scoring system, as do I :deal
watt is not as annoying as smith but i would get rid of them all a new boxing team might bring some life into it
