calzaghe-hopkins wasnt impressive it was a horrendous performance by both hopkins and joe lewis-golata/vitali deserves a shout both golata and vitali were seen as some kind of ivan dragos of the HW devision, both were crushed although vitali gave more of an argument
:good you stole my suggestion 1. Turpin vs Robinson 1 2. Berg vs Canzoneri 1 3. Honeyghan vs Curry 4. Buchanan vs Laguna 1 5. Berg vs Chocolate (i think its number 2) 6. Fitzsimmons vs Corbett 7. McGuigan vs Pedroza 8. Stracey vs Npoles 9. Mills vs Lesenvich 10. Hatton vs Tszyu
Other suggestions..... Lewis vs Ruddock, Golota, Holyfield I & Rahman II Hatton vs Tszyu Calzaghe vs Lacy & Kessler Benn vs Barkley, McClellan Eubank vs Benn I - most people would have died in there Watson vs Benn Loads more really....
In no particular order Buchanan vs Laguna 1 Berg vs Chocolate Berg vs Canzoneri 1 Berg vs Petrolle Lewis vs Britton 2 Honeyghan vs Curry Turpin vs Robinson Stracey vs Napoles Benn vs McClellan Gypsey Daniels vs Max Schmeling
I'd actually say Kid Berg in 1930 had the best year for a British boxer ever beating Tony Canzoneri, Mushy Callahan, Kid Chocolate and Billy Petrolle is quite amazing. Im not sure another British boxer has beat three hall of famers in a single year apart from him. During his peak I'm not sure there was a better British boxer.
I've got the Petrolle fight in my top 10 as well. Like you say what a great run he had . When your talking about greatest British fighters, particularly at their peak he takes some beating.
Turpin- Robinson Lewis - Golota/Ruddock Benn - McLellon Laing - Duran Buchanon - Laguna Calzaghe - Lacy
I agree.... Hopkins try to old man him out of there.... I still think that if the decision would have gone to B-Hop there would not have been to much noise.... it was that close...:yep
That is an absolutely great pick. Kenny Buchanan going away from home against a great champion like Laguna and beating him in that bear pit atmosphere was a sensational acheivement .. My pick for the most impressive win by a Brit is Benn v McClellan .. What a fight this was, the early 90s was a time that Gerald McClellan spread fear through the veins of prospective opponents. Roy Jones was the razzamatazz fighter, James Toney was the old school, technical, attitude fighter and McClellan was the heir apparent to Thomas Hearns, a true 'Hitman', flamboyant punching power, an ultra attacking boxer with great offensive skills. He was called the mini Mike Tyson and back then everybody believed it .. Nobody gave Benn a chance and people were genuinely worried not just that he would be beaten but whether he would be seriously hurt .. McClellan came out and blasted him out of the ring in the first round, Benn looked like he was asleep after eating some bombs from the most feared puncher of the era, but he rallied, used some rough tactics and got McClellan into a streetfight - The rest is tragically history, but for total commitment, facing the fear, heart and true fighting, Benn v McClellan is the number 1 for me, despite the tragic outcome .... Curry v Honeyghan was great from Lloyd but Don Curry's suicidal weight making for years finally came home to roost in that fight .. Curry looked like De La Hoya against Pac in that fight, he had absolutely nothing, but that isnt Honeyghans fault so fair doos .. Laing v Duran was a brilliant performance against a pudgy Duran who hadnt prepared properly .. Calzaghe v Hopkins - I thought Hopkins won that fight so im not going to rate that as great. But to be honest im totally biased against Calzaghe, i try not to be but i just cant stand the guy. I feel the same way about Degale .. Hatton v Tszyu - Great performance from Ricky who out stamina'd Kostya in the twilight of his career and beat him up through tremendous work-rate Lewis v Holyfield II - Lewis picks off an over the hill, slow Holyfield with the jab, using his size advantage brilliantly as usual .. Ultra cautious, and absolutely shitting himself when he has to take a few shots from Evander .. A standard effective performance from Lewis but very difficult to get excited about as everybody knows that Lennox really never wanted a fight, Lennox Lewis sometimes did a nice Larry Holmes impression sometimes with that jab, but its a pale imitation .... Lennox Lewis aint no Holmes Benn v McClellan Buchanan v Laguna Turpin v Robinson
