I know this sounds pretentious but ever in sparring or training get the feeling just when you do something perfect. I got it on Friday. A heavyweight was sparring. He had given 2 guys but up faces (these were good boxers aswell) He was Russian and had been boxing for 2 years but had taken afew years out and just started again for say 2 months. Then the coach tells me to get in with him. I start circling like (what i thought i was probably rubbish) Ray Leonard. I landed quick jabs and 1-2s to his body before getting out of range and moving. I was landing alot on him while he was missing me. He managed to get me on the ropes but i just grabbed him and held on till 'Break' was called. Then started my circling again. Later in the round he landed a good 1-2 as he crowded me on the ropes but i just flurried and got off the ropes. Then after 'time' had been called he didnt hear it and i got clocked by a right hand but luckily i was moving backwards anyway. Felt amazing afterwards thought id be a cocky ***** and tell all of yous how good i am
I think we all have that from time to time, at our own respective levels. When I can hang with someone I look up to, I feel like Superman.
it does feel good, even better when you perform in a fight against someone you respect to see how far you have come inthe sport its what keeps me going and training the way i do i think that russian would have put you flat on your back greg if he really wanted ha
dunno took afew meaty ones as the guy just cant hold himself back sometimes but luvkily he aint a huge hitter. Im a skinny **** but im surprisingly hardy. but your right he probably would have KOd me if we had another round
Im sitting at 56kgs according to teh club scales so im probably about 58kgs now but ill be lighter for my fight. Im always sparring bigger guys so i used to get beat up near every week
A heavyweight at your own level would take your head off. I fight at 64, weigh about 68 right now, but I no longer spar people who are more than ca. 15 pounds heavier because it offers nothing to me. They walk through my punches, at least the decent ones do, I can't keep them honest so I learn nothing. Or they're complete ****, which means I will learn nothing either.
We are of a smilar level obviously he wasnt going full out and he was landing lighter shots. He just couldnt catch me and looked like he couldnt be arsed. If he went all out i would be typing this form a hospital bed
Sometimes when im that peak condition I seriously think to myself like I could probablly hang in their with best 140 pounders in the world. I dont know why but that **** will come to my head and I wind up truely believing it for a day or so.
thats a good attitude to have, should give you amental advantage when your fighting a normal opponent
You know, its not that surprising that this happened Greg. I was a heavyweight and I used to spar middleweights a lot etc. They are usually going to be naturally faster than me, and I wasn't going to punch full out. Sure I could outwork them and walk them down, but then I'd not learn anything, which is why the smaller guys often get the beter in sparring. Same happened with this guy. If he unloaded he'd hurt you at 56kg!
I had the same feeling after some sparring with my coach on Thursday (4 time North Brazilian champion). He's shorter than me so I kept him at range with the jab and landed some nice right hooks to the body. When he tried to get inside the jab I tied him up & did some nice inside work to the body. Don't think he landed a punch on me (although it was only about 2 mins long) Felt good afterwards! I do that! I've pretty much convinced myself I could beat everyone in the world
I know man and believe me im not one to think like oh im so much better then everyone but sometimes ill be sparring or doing anything boxing related and ill be like I seriously dont see how anyone in the world at my weight class could win.
