Did a part of you think "Nah, this thread doesn't need a poll..." or did it just slip your mind? :yep
There has been a thread like this some months back. I respect Kessler and think he's a very good and underrated fighter, but we're talking prime Toney here, the version that destroyed Barkley without even taking a single clean punch, so it's light's out no doubt.
how can kessler be underrated ? his 2 defining fights are a loss to an overrated calzaghe and a win over tough but talentless and unexperienced (against fine oposition) andrade.
I'm probably Kessler's biggest backer on this side of the pond, and I don't really give him a ghost of a chance against a young James.
I agree that Kesslers resume is poor, and that his best fight ironically was a loss. It's a shame he hasn't fought better opposition, for whatever reasons. Because I've seen a lot of his fights, and he really is skilled, he stays focused, has good footwork, timing, eye, and a good punch. One of the very best fighters out there from MW upwards. He still beat some decent (not great) opponents and always made it look easy. His heart and chin have never been really tested though. I expect him to win the super six tournament. Kessler is also Calzaghes best win imo. Calzaghes best performance. Calzaghe might be overrated, but he was great in that fight. Now I don't count the Hopkins fight as a win for Calzaghe as I had Hopkins ahead by 1 point - the fight could've gone either way. As for Roy, well he was very faded when Calzaghe faced him.
Kessler would barely make an All time top 10 Supermiddle list never mind sharing a ring with Toney. I wouldnt even say Kessler is on the level of a Reggie Johnson, hes more on the level of a sugar boy Malinga
These comments always cracks me up. Are you trying to get some attention or what is it that you are pulling off here? Drake Thadzi, Montell Griffin x2 (The second one was practically a shutout, mind you). Both fighters at the very best in Kesslers league. If they were capable of giving Toney problems, and handing him losses, then why would not Kessler be able to? I am not predicting a Kessler win here, but to say that the man would be sent home in a black bag for early retirement is ludicrous. The man has never been stopped amateur or pro. Toney by decision.
