    I'd be worried if you didn't ;)

Widely unknown my arse. He was scheduled to fight Hearns during 1982 before Hearns pulled out. It was widely anticipated, with public expectation being that Hearns was jumping the gun badly and needed to give himself more time to grow, mature and round out his craft.

So Hearns and Hagler were going to fight in a theatre capable of holding 500 people?!?!?! LOL

Pretty simple this one, Hagler would have got vastly more money than he had been (why do you think he was screaming so loudly for superstars Leonard and Hearns?). "Big fight" with Hamsho? This would not have been in the same stratospere as fighting Leonard.

Hagler was something like a 5-1 fave in 87, and mostly only the dumbest of boxing fans (who ironically turned out right) would have been picking Hagler. You don't think Hagler beating Hearns made an impact? Fair crack of the whip

Like most, Hagler was more accepted and widely acclaimed the farther his career went on. Pretty simple. He had to wait for big names and his division wasn't exactly blessed with talent and fame when he ruled early on. Superfights make superstars but Hagler's abilities were well known to anyone who knew boxing back in 82.

It's not my theory. It's widely accpeted. Instead of after the Mugabi fight and declaring "I can beat Hagler" he could have said it at any time before since he worked most of Hagler's bouts from ringside. :smoke

You didnt think of that did you??

Look, we all know it's no coincience Leonard call these guys out after their most vulnerable performances. Ray should have gone into prison like Tyson if he wanted a real excuse to get out of fighting. At least then it would be believable.

But coming out when some other champion looks beatable (Hagler in the Duran fight) and then retiring because you dont perform as well as you thought you should have, arouses suspicions. Just as dictating the weight, glove size, ring size, number of rounds. So why can't he set the date just like he sets everything else?

It's a fight the public wanted from the beginiing and, Leonard himself said it himself "I want Marvin Hagler" on HBo from ringside during the first Hamsho fight. But Ray backed out of the challenge he originally set and then backed out again after the Finch fight by claiming his eye was keeping him out of boxing. Not his lack of competitive spirt, but his eye.

To be honest, I think he recognized Hagler was far too ambitious an opponent and he didnt want to embarrass himself

How old am i? i'am 53, don't come the smart **** with me you mouthy ****:nono

Hagler was NOT a superstar, LEONARD WAS THE MAN, LEONARD WAS A GLOBAL IMAGE, Hagler was respected, Hagler did his fighting in Boston/New York/italy/small town worcester, LEONARD IS/WAS & ALWAYS WAS THE DRAW, LEONARD IS THE MONEY. LEONARD WAS A VEGAS MAIN EVENT i.e Hearns/Leonard 1, Benitez/Leonard & UNDERCARD Antuefermo/HAGLER. It was the Duran fight that gave Hagler his 1st real big Vegas Main event & even then he played 2nd fiddle & thats why he hated Leonard who made squillions compared to Haglers more modest paydays.

**** the opening betting odds you mug, thats 2 suck in the clowns like you & all the smart $$$$$ would have come down on Leonard in the last hour. The populer press concensus at the time was that leonard was 2 fast, skillfull + everything else too lose too Hagler & as i said Hagler was respected but NOT worshiped, he was seen as the next big challenge. an obstacle but not an unpassable one.

So what are you going on, your ozzie press clippings? don't ever say there's any BS in what i write you **** as i'am one of the few on here thats got a bit of background unlike 50% of the u-tube/box rec babes here.

you're givin it like you're in the know so give us yer list of fights/press conferences you've attended in Vegas/New York big boy or anywhere so i can see we can see what real BS is.

Anyway, who the **** are you?

    Or terribly biased

    ;)

I'll be back to address the rest of your tripe tonight.

P.S. Sorry Leonard carved up your hero 2-1

Leonard could of stayed and cleaned out the WW\LMW division but he did not.

Leonard always had one eye on his legacy and always wanted to have Hagler on his resume, so when he saw that Hagler was no longer the same fighter he was suddenly keen to fight and his eye did not seam to trouble him as much.

How many times did he defend any of his titles?.

No he couldn't have cleaned out the LMW division. Tommy Hearns was there. Leonard couldn't have beaten Hearns at 154. Leonard waited until he thought Tommy was shot before he took him on again. Tommy surprised him.

I think that Leonard would be in with a chance, at the least.

These discussions are getting more and more bizarre. All I can say is that those who think that Leonard went into retirement to hide from Hagler should seek help.

It was of course other reasons (his retina and drug problems are a matter of record), but he probably needed a special challenge to get interested in the sport once again. Hagler was that challenge, and Leonard probably felt he'd aged enough to make it a challenge he could overcome. But it was still one hell of a challenge.

Maybe Gil Clancy was a little bit carried away when he exclaimed in the last round "This has never been done before in the history of boxing, win or lose", but it was far more sound than Rooster et al's lunacy. You guys really should get a grip. For lack of better words - you have truly lost it.

Wait a minute-you forgot that Kevin Howard was a special challenge to get back in the sport. Don Lalonde was a special challenge as well. There goes your explanation

at age 40, Hector Camacho was his special challenge he needed to make his 4th comeback.

Your delusions when it comes to Leonard reallly hurt your credibility as a poster overall, even though you're actually not half bad otherwise. That is something for others to think about before they go into similar insane, mouth-frothing rants.

The notion that Leonard concocted an elaborate hoax of damaged retina and drug problems, losing the best years of his career in the process, just to "duck" a fighter he didn't at all have to duck (since they were two weightclasses apart, after all) is the single most embarassingly stupid thing I've ever seen posted on this forum. It's absolultely priceless in its insanity.

He also missed out on a lot of huge paydays losing those years.
