Who made this myth up that pep won a round without throwing a punch against Jackie Greaves, when he never.

And lots of people still belive this, Bert Sugar also always mentions it.

Who made this myth up and why do some people still belive it's true?

Willie Pep aknowleged it as a hype myth.... it never happened. A simple tale that grew over the years via the press.

Willie is said to have told a journalist/sportswriter that he could win a round of boxing via his evasiveness... not needing to throw a punch to assume control of the action.. Having been put to the task of doing so, he signalled the bloke at ringside and went ahead for a round of artful brilliance, keeping his opponent searching for body and head..

.....as far any authenticity relating to the story, its about as true as Ali's Gold Medal being tossed off the Hudson Bridge, as true as Dempsey's gloves being loaded and almost as true as Jack Johnson taking a dive against Willard...

    Go Figure....

Well, the myth was that Pep won the third round of a fight against Jackie Graves without throwing a punch. Obviously, that's incorrect, but Pep did have 200 plus fights in his career, and it's natural to get confused when your resume is that extensive. It's quite possible that he did win rounds against lesser opponents while throwing maybe a handful of punches, and just relying upon his defensive skills to put on a show.

Ali won a few rounds on the judges cards against Ron Lyle, Leon Spinks and Jimmy Young without throwing a punch too.
