Who Was The Greater Fighter Tony Canzoneri Or Marvin Hagler?

I think this is a hard one to pick.

 

I would probably put Canzoneri inside the top 20, where as Marvin would be just outside of my top 30.

 

Interesting. Reasons????

 

Canzoneri

 

Hagler. He completely dominated the middleweight division for the better part of a decade. Canzoneri was great, but he had his ups and downs.

 

Marvellous Marvin Hagler in my opinion

 

Reasons????

 

The usual reasons. He has a much better resume and maintained his success through 3 divisions compared to Marvin's 1.

 

Canzonari was a great fighter in a great era and had many fights against great fighters of his time and always aquitted himself well.....Marvin did the same in his...2 different weight divisions...both were top 5 in there divisions....both were equally great in there divisions

 

Canzoneri had success across more weight classes, but I'm not sure if he was necessarily better than Hagler in any one of them. Then again, he did face consistently better opposition than Hagler, so it's hard to judge.

 

hagler for me but i do tend to favour fighters that dominate a weight for a long time over fighters that move up weight division's. saying that the era that canzoneri fought in was amazing but as said i would just edge towards hagler

 

Hagler displayed far greater skills in his prime while Canzoneri was just your average gutty type. But Hagler had that and more ie; better defense, tools, much sharper, smarter, and that led to his being a dominant fighter. No one would go near Hagler in his prime.

I also wouldn't make too much of the multiple titles craze as it tends to get overrated. Look at Ray Leonard knocking out the bigger man Lalonde but couldnt deal with a man his own weight at 154.

 

I'd rate Canzoneri higher based on his success across different weight classes, and the fact he took on bigger guys and won, whereas Hagler's success, as great as he was, was made against smaller guys like Duran, Hearns. In terms of capabilities, both are pretty versatile in that they can both box and both can bang a bit aswell, aswell as being tough and durable. Canzoneri around 25-29, Hagler around 32-37.

I think most top fighters could take on bigger guys sucessfully. I pretty much dismiss the whole moving up bit as hype.

it's about how good you are at your best weight, not about how far you can move up. Look at Duran when he moved up to face off with Moore where he met with success but with Hearns he met with disaster at that same weight.

Measuring a fighter's worth at higher weights is not the way to go.

Tony was a short armed infighter. A blood and guts type, a face first protoype for the Lamottas of the world-a good clubfighter but just a clubfighter while Hagler was far more gifted physically and p4p the top choice four straight years-the fisitic equivalent of royalty
