Kelly Pavlik vs. Floyd Mayweather: does Kelly become p4p No.1 if he beats Mayweather?

The agreed weigh-in weight is 158 lbs but they are fighting for the Middleweight Championship.

So, at the weigh-in, Mayweather clocks in at 154 lbs. Pavlik clocks in at 160 lbs. He pays Mayweather $600k for being 2 lbs over the agreed weight-limit. He couldn't give a damn about trying to kill himself to make the fight reasonably fair.

On the night, Mayweather weighs in at 164 lbs and Pavlik at 174 lbs.

Pavlik gets outboxed by Mayweather for a couple of rounds, but eventually his jab/straight right combo makes the difference. Pavlik pushes Mayweather against the ropes and catches him big a couple of times: Pavlik T/KO 8 Mayweather.

Would that mean Pavlik was better pound-for-pound than Mayweather?

See, I think Pavlik would beat Mayweather at 160 lbs. According to the way some Mayweather fans are judging the Marquez vs. Mayweather situation, if Pavlik were to beat Mayweather at 160 lbs, he'd be better p4p than Mayweather. Funny, huh?

Your post is flawed. Mayweather would have to weigh in over 154 for a title fight at 160.

Not sure that is strictly true, though I can see why it might be, but anyway, let's assume you're right. I'll change my post.

why would mayweather come in at 154 for a 158 fight and then blow up to 164 in 24 hours?

Everything else about this scenario makes absolutely perfect sense mind.

Hydration and pre-fight meals. Almost every fighter who goes up in weight gains weight in the last 36 hours if they're doing it right. Marquez did vs. Mayweather and so did Pacquiao vs. Hatton.

I can tell you're a loser with that avatar.

No mayweather fan is saying Floyd should be ranked number 1. Still your post is flawed anyway considering Floyd is undefeated and already was number 1 before he retired and Pavlik got his ass kick by Bhop.

There's another thread on this topic, and on ESB this is a 50/50 fight. In real life PBF would get absolutley demolished, and that rather quickly.

Obviously Mayweather is a lot more talented and naturally gifted than Pavlik. At 160 he could probably beat Sylvester and he might beat Sturm, but this fight is on the same level with a WWE freak show; Rey Mysterio vs The undertaker:patsch

I am right there with you on this. Sometimes, it helps to put things into perspective, which is what I was trying to do, for those who didn't already get it.

Your comparison is beyond stupid. Anyone in their right mind will tell you that Floyd is a better fighter than JMM. Now JMM was at a serious size disadvantage in that fight, but you'd be a fool to think that JMM would have a legit shot at beating Floyd even if they did compete at the same weight class. It's just a bad matchup for JMM, the weight difference just made it worse.

Now pretty much everyone will also tell you that Floyd is a better fighter than Pavlik. If they were even close to the same size, Floyd would be a prohibitive favorite over Pavlik. Size is the only reason Pavlik could beat Floyd.

Sorry guys. Pavlik would have to triple his speed and footwork, and learn how to throw something other than the 'double ****ing jab' to beat Mayweather. Floyd would circle the ring and pot shot all night....

Size and reach are overrated variables when you're talking about a talent like Floyd Mayweather. I have no love for the guy and I can't stand his out of the ring personae, but no way does he get beat by Pavlik. Nothing against Kelly, he's a quality fighter, but he is about as difficult to figure out as a traffic light. The man is just a one two puncher. And no matter how well he does it, Mayweather who figure him out right quick. In fact, I don't think Kelly would even land a glove on Floyd....For crying out loud he didn't land one on Hopkins.

Really, this is an easy one to call. Mayweather in a virtual shut out 12 round decision.
