Nobody seems to take him seriously anymore. Every single boxer that is matched up against him now is expected to out box him. Over a year ago he was all people were talking about, now to the boxing public... he is a nobody with no skill who will lose to anybody he steps in the ring with. I was just on youtube looking up what peoples predictions were for his fight with Paul Williams. Only one video had a guy in it that was picking Pavlik, all the other videos were saying Paul Williams is gonna savagely beat him to a pulp and that Pavlik stands no chance what so ever. I really don't get it. One loss to a Crafty HOF'er and now he is a bum who cant box for his life. And in many of the videos I kept hearing about Pavlik having a glass jaw......How the **** is that??? He took flush shots from Miranda...never went down.......took 15 flush shots dead in the face from Taylor...got up at the count of 2.....Took huge shots from B-Hop the whole fight...never went down. How can anybody say he has a glass jaw? Carl froch was dropped by Taylor with 1/10 as many of Shots as Pav was hit with....yet he is said to have an Iron Jaw. This one loss to Hopkins has at the moment destroyed his career. I dont get how only one person out of a huge selection of Videos picked him to win over williams. Paul Williams is not Hopkins......He was outboxed by a much less skilled and smaller figher then hop....he trows 100 punches a round...but so does Pavlik. And no way does Paul hit harder then Pavlik. There are tons of fighters with losses on their records, but are still taken seriously. Pav has only one loss to one of the best fighters of our time.....and he is now a joke of a fighter who needs to retire. I just dont get it.
Good post. I would only say so if I genuinely agreed, although Pavlik hasn't been doing himself any favors lately.
heres my 2 cents.. paul just beat winky. winky has awesome defense pavilk fights similar to winky but with less defense paul by tko or stoppage easy
Well I all ways thought he was over hyped and knew he would get schooled against Hopkins! BUT he will beat Williams! I predict that at first Williams will out land Pavlik and make him look silly but as the bout progresses Pavlik will start to take over and ko Williams in late rounds! That's if Williams will fight the same way he did against Winky! He has problems with defense and is wide open for counters! IMO
It is Pavlik's own fault. At least some or perhaps even most of it. Instead of being eager to come back and demonstrate that it was just a hick-up - instead of doing that he openly said that he did not want to join the Super Six unless he was paid much more than what they are getting (and if we consider that they get at least $4-5 mill each per fight and the winner will end up with more than $50 million..we may wonder how much Kelly wants..) because so many top fights in a row would be far too risky. He even said that he doesn't understand how all these 6 could agree to something so risky. Add to that that he is perceived to have postponed fight after fight after the Hopkins fight... He seems to just have disappeared into a dark hole and be unwilling to ever return. With his current body of work after the Hopkins fights, and his seemingly psychological problems with self-doubt - how are the fans supposed to believe in him?
Pavlik does not fight similar to Winky. Just because fighters work off a jab does not mean they are similar.
I think the problem with Pavlik is that his people were doubting him before the BHop fight because there didnt seem much determination to really take over the decision like he said especially with Abraham calling him out. Take a look at his record with his last five opponents. Miranda - this made everyone take notice. Knocked out a tough and powerful fighter in miranda. Howver, this is the same Miranda that had already been beated by Abraham and no one can say Miranda is a skillful fighter. Taylor - 2 good wins over a good champion but one still living off the hype of out working BHop in two close decisions. I think the 2nd victory was the best but then this is the same Taylor who was already being heavily crtiticsed in the media for his lacklustre approach and choice of opponents. He then gets KO'd by Froch and is now fighting to regain his own status. Locket - well people gave him a pass on this as he was defending his newly won straps. Fair enough but ummmm Locket is no world beater we can agree. BHop - Now if you remember how many people thought the old man was at the end of his career. Good opportunity for Kelly to get a name on his resume especially as Calzaghe had just given a blue print on how to beat Hop. Even further people were trying to hype a Calz - Pavlik fight. Consider how badly Pavlik was schooled and at that level it showed his skills were seriously lacking. Rubio - I guess a comeback fight but since then no Abraham fight. Some of the people who gave Pavlik the benefit of the doubt about that fight not being made changed sides once Abraham showed his intentions by moving up to fight in the super six.
Don Prestige....What people forget too is that Pavlik CHOSE to go to LHW (anything above 168 is LHW, before any smart asses start with it!). Rubio and Lockett were given Mandatory status by the WBC and WBO, he knocked them the **** out just like he was supposed too. But for his only Voluntary he's had since he won his titles, he CHOSE Bernard Hopkins! Yes, he lost BAD, but how many fighters have that kind of balls and attitude?
Fair point. I think though that it was the percieved notion at that time that he was taking on a fighter that was past it and that while he was moving up he was the young lion with devestating power that was going to send the old fox in to retirement. Arum obviously thought he was making a smart move. Especially given the fact that Calzaghe and Taylor had shown how to beat Hop. What Pavlik showed was that after all the hype he still is a one dimensional fighter. Once you throw rumours of alcohol problems in with his inactivity its not hard to see why people are not on the train anymore.
