A lot of people compare him to Sugar Ray Leonard and I can see why. But if Floyd ever ends up in the trenches will he dig himself out and fight fire with fire. Of course SRL stood up to Duran and didn't back away from Hearns when the chips were down but what will Floyd do should it happen? Mosley and Pac are capable of tagging the fella and having him in uncomfortable spots. Will Floyd just use speed and duck out or would he stand and trade with these guys. The only reason I haven't mentioned Cotto is because I can't see Miguel getting anywhere near him unfortunately
Yeah ok but that was then and this is now. People are only tagging on to Floyd now. A lot of boxing fans will never have seen his fights at 130 etc when he was frankly untouchable. If he can make mince meat out of his foes from here on in without doing so then fine but if he goes on to fight guy where the weight gap isn't as great as it was from Sat I want to see Floyd dig himself out of trouble should he have to.
He has done plenty of times but he generally waits until hes clearly got the advantage, like if the other guy is tiring a bit or just outmatched In all honesty hes not really that type of fighter, I'd guarantee he wouldnt do it with Mosley, might do it with Pac if hes sure hes got the edge.
Why should he? When you got a talent like his why would you go toe to toe? Not everyone is a gatti or pac, some fighters can actually use their skill to win fights and not their power. This is BOXING. Mayweather goes home healthy to his family and kids after every fight like nothing even happened. That is the most important to a boxer. How many boxers can do that in this day and age? Imagine Cotto going home after the clottey win. Imagine Gatti going home after he got schooled by Mayweather. Imagine Vargas going home after he got destroyed by Mosley. Boxing is a deadly sport and people can get seriously injured. You say why dont he go toe to toe, I say why does he have to?
Yeah I know he's not that kind of fighter mate it'd be fascinating to see how he'd respond against Mosley, Pac or Cotto if he was in a world of trouble.
So then why did SRL do it? He wanted to show the world that he could. I ****ing know that Floyd doesn't have to because he is an exceptional fighter and one of the greatest over the last 30 years. But he talks himself up and up and up. People compare him to SRL - talent wise yes but he'll never ever get the same respect that SRL did and still does. And this is coming from a Hagler diehard. And I know not everyone can be a Pac or Gatti, don't insult me I know boxing brings us all sorts of talents. But because of his mouth and his continued choice of opponent at 147 it means the respect will never be where he wants it to be. Diehards knew him at 130 etc, the casual fan don't.
Well basically then I'd say no he wouldnt. I think if Floyd was actually in trouble, he was being hurt, I'm 99% sure he would cover up, and purely use his defence to try and avoid taking more. However we dont know because the closest hes been to that situation is what...Augustus? Corley? Wouldnt count Castillo as he was more in trouble in a different sense.
I think this may well happen..... He has never been toe-to-toe yet because, like others have said, he doesnt have to. No-one has been good enough to force it out of him. He has even said himself that he does want that kind of fight, almost in the SRL example of "to prove i can". Im sure someone here could point us in the direction of a quote. He was never retired. He went away to build a desire to see him again. He has come back perfectly into a situation where you now have true, worthy contenders and a huge demand to see him fight. If it goes to plan, i think you will see him fight Pac, then SSM. He will then be done. He will still be too good for Pac and then SSM will give him the "fight" that will define him....yet true retirement with his "0" intact will follow. Love him or hate him, he is the greatest of his generation by a long way, and a savvy business man who will play everyone to his tune and should, rightly so, cement a legacy where no doubts will be left of him by those that appreciate his talent!
I know there will never be a Floyd war I just want to see what he'd do if **** hits the fan and he's tagged, backed up and getting bombs thrown at him and he has nowhere to go. Yes he will probably cover up but I'd love to see him fire back with a speedy combo, the crowd would be on their feet lapping it up.
