There's not enough high level operators at the top of the HW division and there's a very restless fanbase looking for meaningful fights.
Up-coming prospects are skipping the B level and going straight for the A's. In many ways it's no good for anybody, these guys come up thinking they're Tits on Ice only to get brought shattering down to Earth by the two guys that really rule this division and never to be heard from again.
Where did Thompson and Ibragimov go? Brock imploded. Austin is a King fighters. Dimitrenko is looking to pick up the pieces. Povetkin is MIA. Chambers possibly the only one doing well. Heck even Toney is still around. All these guys need to fight each other - a guy like Arreola or Haye should have 2-3 of those guys on his resume already.
That said, who is Klitschko supposed to fight in the mean time?

There was an article how Vitali's camp already scheduled a fight against Johnson for December (should he prevail against Arreola). And then by March a mandatory would be due, possibly against Maskaev.

If it unfolds like that it sure looks like he's trying to get as many fights in as possible before possibly retiring next year? Just speculating.

Arreola still looks fat, 251 pounds is way too heavy. He will pay the price for it in the ring. Vitali has a clear edge in experience, skills and most importantly conditioning. My guess is that Arreola will make it interesting for the first 4 rounds and then gass out and get knocked out by Vitali.

Maskaev and the rejuvinated Toney should fight an eliminator first because quite frankly neither guy deserves a title shot right now.

who the hell would arreolla fight for the next 2 years ? no this isnt early at all....thats the prob with any decent fight being made..everyone thinks you need years to build it...and thats a load of crap......you put 2 guys in with each other when the stoves hot....plus hes the #1 contender....its do or die....people would lose interest waiting another 2 years

I disagree, it is too early. Arreola has not gained enough experience to fight a seasoned champ like Vitali. In fact, Arreola has fought absolutely nobody and it will show in the ring. Who would he fight? How about Tony Thompson, Maskaev, Dimitrenkov, Ibrahinigv, ruiz....etc

Experience is a point too, although my point was that both of these guys look great on TV/for the public, and given their KO ratio and going-for-punishment/knockout style, this could be a potentially memorable battle. But it doesn't get the attantion this 'potentially big HW clash of charismatic fighters' deserve, which is a pity, because if one of them ends up losing decisively, I'm afraid we'll have to wait ages for the next battle of hard punching HW characters, as I don't consider Haye as an interesting character.

This is hardly a super fight. Arreola, while he has scored some impressive KO's... he shows up more out of shape and doesn't have a champion appearance.

All I know is that Maskaev still has some open business with the WBC, even though Vitali won in the Swiss sports arbitration court so he could face Haye/Arreola instead of facing Maskaev immediately as the WBC wanted.

The next mandatory is due by March 2010 and (I am just speculating here) if the WBC is trying to avoid being sued by Maskaev they might declare him the mandatory challenger by then, maybe even without a final elimination bout.

iceman, it's not that the fight needs to take years to build, it's that in the natural progression of Arreola's career the fight should have already built itself...and it really hasn't, it's still a bit soft-boiled, not ready to come out of pot just yet.

In my opinion, no, it's not. Arreola I've never been convinced by. Power and aggression against C+ level guys is all well and good, but he's not even faced a top 25 fighter yet let alone top 10. And with his lack of dedication and training, he'd get knocked out by at least one of the top guys outside the Klitschko's first, so why not take his opportunity for a big payday now?

interesting but vitaly's 38 now so there's no need to delay any fight. plus this is just an interesting, possibly good HW title fight for a change which should be happening more often and hopefully does. plus arrola's young enough that if he is destined to be a legitimate elite HW (which really remains to be seen), than a rematch could certainly occur in a couple of years assuming vitaly's still at it. the bottom line is we need good hw fights now after a lot of lackluster title fights. this may not even be a good fight (though it's got the potential) so no need to wait any longer

Will Vitali even be around in 2 years?
