He twice offered Ray Robinson the highest purse of his career only to be refused. I'm sorry, that the fight didn't come off is noone's fault but Robinson's.

Also, you obviously haven't done much research into his resume. Despite the fact that he was often ducked, he still beat a slew of great fighters and proved himself more than conclusively. He just never got the fights that could've really proved him among the greatest of all time. As it was, he was still unquestionably a great and very proven fighter, along with every other member of the Murderer's Row from that period, which he was arguably the class of.

I do agree that his reputation in some aspects both pro and con, though.

Well, true to a large degree that I have not looked into Burley's career very hard, mainly due to lack of interest... No offense, but certain guys who fight in obscurity do interest me; just not Charles Burley....

I have a big problem buying that Ray Robinson backed out or haired out of a pair of fights with Burley because he was scared or worried about something..... I'd like to hear the real story behind that scenario, however, everyone who was powerful in promoting back then is probably dead here in 2009.....

And considering boxing was pretty established by the 1940s and 50s, I find it hard that not one crooked promoter from any given city here in the USA could come up with enough money to satisfy both Robinson and Burley so they could fight.... Burley's management was lousy......... Even Stevie Wonder can see that.........

You know, by the middle of the 20th century, champions / fighters couldn't use the "Colored" or "Racial" excuse to back away from a proposed bout like they could do in the early 1900s all the way up to 1935 or so........ Charles Burley was NOT getting shafted or dicked around like Peter Jackson, Sam Langford, Harry Willis or even George Godfrey for cryin' out loud...... Them older dudes really had to deal with the color barrier when they were fighting........ I say Charles Burley skated by his best days fighting for lesser purse money in obscure places because he was poorly handled.....

Sure, Charles Burley did beat some damn good fighters.. I am not denying him of that.... But, he did fight some good name fighters for chump change because he was managed like a chump...

I also don't wanna hear any SOB stories that Burley refused to sign with big name promoters because he didn't want to split his money or be robbed by the mobsters who were in the game back then.... I heard all that crap from the "LaMotta" and "Jersey J. Walcott" stories a long time ago..... However, both eventually became champs.....

When a fighter of Charles Burley's stature gets nowhere in the spotlight and cannot make big money for the times, something is wrong with his handlers and connections or, the fighter himself...... Burley lacked something.......

You said it yourself. Burley, like all of the Black Murderer's Row, was poorly managed. That is the root of the reason the bigger name white fighters and the top black fighters like Robinson wanted nothing to do with him. He was extremely high risk, low reward because his name was not a houssehold one. In incredibly slick, crafty boxer that most top mainstream opponents didn't want any part of because they weren't interested in being made to look poor by a fighter so much lesser reknowned by the general public (not managers, trainers, or the fighters themselves, however). They weren't willing to risk damaging their credibility for so little a reward.

You'll have to ask McGrain about the purse that was offered to Robinson, though. My knowledge on that subject is a bit shady.

The great thing about the way these lists are organised is that one oddball list can be absorbed. But:

Because you're you you have to explain why these guys are above Britton, specifically Lewis.

That's absolutley fine; nobody can be an expert on everybody.

What isn't fine, in fact what is the exact opposite of helpful, is to come onto the forum and start shouting and screaming about what "utter horse****" it is that he was widely ducked for his quality or denegrate the "sob stories" you by your own admition know nothing about. If you haven't bothered to look into his career and are disatisfied because he isn't on ESPN enough, just pipe down.

I think that some of the moves made on Burley's behalf were OK. The JD Turner match was a high bid, and when they cobbled money together they made an open offer to ANYONE, basically, to come fight him. They chased charity cards and they offered his services for free on occasion. Burley's problems were twofold. 1) He was stuck fighting a combination of the very best and bigger men and 2) He was boring against this type of fighter about 3 times out of 4. So when the money was in place there was no outcry for someone to match him; the general public weren't that interested in Burley with so many gunslinger types making the rounds.

His colour didn't help and although I don't want to overplay that card, he was too good for the financial reward available, as you've said. One occasion where he really was far, far too good for his own good was the one round KO of McQuillan in New York. That was pretty much his last push at the big time and nobody was interested in matching him in NY after seeing him in action, and he certainly was anything but boring that night. JG saw this one live, incidently.
