Too bad they didn't prime at the same time. In a battle of Joes, and the two best WW's of the 70's...Joe N would've won by decision or maybe even late TKO, as he had the stoppage power. But then again, if Joe C cut him or caught him flush...
Napoles stops a wide open Cuevas in round two. A few swings and misses by Cuevas, and Napoles would operate with an acute sense of urgency..knowing what a danger Pipino was...he would have destroyed Cuevas..in the same way a prime Leonard would have done.
I pretty much agree with this, although think he does it later. I like how you included the Leonard bit in this particular thread
Yeah, I wonder why that fight was never made...I saw Leonard doing color work for a Cuevas fight, one time, and there was Leonard, sitting there listening to Cuevas being asked how he'd do against him...and he's saying in Spanish "I knock heem out" more or less, and several times...when Leonard was told what Pipino was saying, he just smiled...he didn't say anything...I remember thinking "like hell you knock heem out"...bull****...Leonard would have owned Pipino.
Napoles fought a similar big puncher as a lightweight in 1964 named Carlos Morocho Hernandez..Hernandez would become junior welter champ the next year...Carlos decked Napoles in the 2nd round, but that woke up Mantequilla, who took Hernandez apart with blistering body shots, mixed in with a head whipping..the fight was stopped in the 6th..with Hernandez being rescued by the ref...Napoles would have done a real number on Cuevas as well, only worse than what he did to Hernandez. Napoles was a real badass..a very quick, lethal puncher.
WICKED match.............. Napoles is the better general of the ring, but Cuevas was much more powerful............ Dual guess: Cuevas by early rd KO, or Nap schools him to take the nod after 15 rds........ Cheers.... MR.BILL
Mantequilla get a clear win; perhaps even by mid-late stoppage Pinino's major asset is his firepower ... but it won't be any good for him unless he can catch Napoles, and that is not happening
From my understanding, Leonard had the option to persue it in '79 but he fought that undefeated lineal champion bum Benitez instead. Napoles TKO5 Cuevas
People are forgetting exactly how dominating Cuevas was for about 4 years. He was blowing out the division. That said, Napoles was a poet with fists. I will take him to figure out even a prime Cuevas.
Cuevas was a very good fighter indeed. Although he didnt have the lineal title, 11 defenses of his WBA strap is impressive and he beat some good fighters. That said, he was fortunate for the time he was able to reign.. The storm was brewing. Benitez, Leonard, Duran and Hearns are coming...
