Fighting Weight is holding on by a thread :rofl:rofl You picked the WRONG fighters to make a living out of bashing you dirty , rotten toothed englishman.
Yes, Lewis got the stoppage, but to anybody who actually saw the fight it was clear that he was taking more of a beating then Vitali was. Lewis was badly gassed and wobbled a number of times. Granted, Vitali was gassed also. Lewis won the decision, but Vitali won the event. And Lennox Lewis is my favorite heavyweight of all time.
This is not a racist site. Please refrain from using derogatory language here. Thanking you in advance, The Russman
They beat the crap out of each other. If Vitali's skin did not tear so badly (but he still got hit as hard), then in my opinion, Vitali would most likely have won that fight. I think he had more left in the tank as of the end of the 6th, despite the bleeding and aggavation of the cuts. And saying Lewis was old and undertrained is an exaggeration. He said before the fight that he was ready. Clearly he was a career high weight, but he was hardly butterbean. I'd say he was at 95%+. Interesting that in interviews prior to Arreola, Vitali sounded like interviews with Lewis before Klitscho (i.e. I'm not over the hill, I'm trained and ready, and my experience will allow me to prevail). But if Arreola had come close, his detractors would have blamed Vitali's age, and said Arreola was no good. Lewis-Klitschko was legitimately stopped and it's a legitimate Lewis victory, but it wasn't definitive enough of an ending for many fans - that's why it's still being argued over. If Lennox had KD'd Klitschko and the fight stopped, then there wouldn't have been 5% of the debate about it since.
How the hell do you win the event when you get stopped? Vitali fought a good fight and answered any questions people had about his heart, but Lennox was starting to come on strong in that fight. A loss is a loss. True winners don't believe in moral victories. I'm pretty sure Dr. Ironfist doesn't give a **** about supposedly "winning the event".
Lewis is in my top 5 ATG Heavys, sometimes top 3 depending on the day. :yep The truth is that was a great fight and no one knows who would've won if the fight was left to continue.
Good post. Vitali announced himself that night and fought a good fight but there wasn't really any controversy and the mud slinging since the fight has become tiresome.
I do not think that there is anyone that would take anything away from Lewis and his career! He was a great fighter! But anyone that can say that he beat the living **** out of Vitali either bases his opinion on the cut, but didn't see the fight or just dislikes Vitali and refuses to give him credit for the Lewis fight. Vitali took the fight on the same amount of notice and it was a great fight! Vitali was leading on all the cards when the doc stopped the fight due to a cut! Vitali was slowing a bit at that point, but maybe it had something to do with the cut bleeding into his eye in addition to being tired from the pace they were fighting at? Based on the way the fight went down, most observers felt that there should have been a rematch! I felt there should have been a rematch as well! One cannot help but wonder why Lewis decided to get out when he did? Did Vitali retire Lewis? Let's just say that their fight may helped his decision along. As for the mention of Golota/Bowe!!!! If there is any example of a fighter retiring another fighter it's Golota/Bowe. Bowe never took the beatings that he took in those 2 fights before and he was never the same again! Bowe had just gotten off a KO victory over Holyfield 6-8 months earlier. The same Holyfield that pummeled Mike Tyson 1 year later. Golota definitely put Bowe on vacation!
I put that in to rub it in Fightingweights face :good The belief that Vitali walked away from that fight looking better then when he came in and Lewis came away from that fight looking worse. Lampley ended the HBO telecast with "It's safe to say and many would agree that Lewis won the fight, but Klitschko won the event" There is a history on this site of Long Heated debates about this fight, and that specific line from Lampley.
The initial punch that started the cut to the eye was a glancing blow and not even close to the hardest punch landed by either man.
Fair enough. So Russ, sorry to go off on a tangent but are you more of a Vitali man then? I always assumed you were more of a Wlad follower.
