Even with his eyes closed...His intent was to throw that punch...Eyes closed or not...its still not a lucky punch...Thats my whole point...I think a lot a fans (not saying you but fans in general) try to downplay Tarver victory over Roy like its some fluke...I gotta give props were its due and admit that Tarver just had Roy's #:good
YAWN.. this thread isn't about Roy Jones, it's about Bernard Hopkins. We're trying to have a discussion in here. I'm open to differing viewpoints, but stay on topic or go **** up some other thread, please and thanks. :hi:
Thats up to one's speculation...but IMO I think he would have gave him a run for his money...Not saying he would have thrashed him but Tarver would have put up a decent fight IMO.
I still can't believe people are using the weight excuse for Pavlik. All everyone was talking about prior to that fight was if Hopkins would get KOed. Pavlik fought at a weight limit of 166 against JT. He was only moving up 4 lbs. I know he weighed in at 164 but people making this claim that he jumped up 2 weight classes is bullsh*t. Really, Hopkins could beat Pavlik in any weight class. He's just that much better than Pavlik. It was skill that beat him. Not weight. Hopkins could probably beat Pavlik when he's 50. Well, i know he can.
Well a Roy Jones clearly past his prime, fresh off cutting 15 some pounds of muscle and out of breath after 2 minutes of the first round ended up beating Tarver in the first fight, soooooo.. :huh
Probably, that's why I said he had a style perfect for Hops to deconstruct. But pavlik's weight 166 against another then-middleweight. Bernard was already established as a true LHW when pavlik fought him. I think it's worth mentioning. No matter how you look at it, it was his first fight two weight classes up. Regardless of whether his body can easily accommodate the extra weight is a whole other issue from whether or not he is actually EFFECTIVE at that new weight.
What is your definition of "many?" Put a poll up about who won Tarver/Jones I and we'll see just how "many" think Tarver won. What is the point in bringing it up, you ask? The point is Jones was clearly past it by the time the first fight came around, so per the discussion about how a prime Jones would have fared against Tarver, it's very important to consider.
It means that my people on websites(other boxing websites), respected writers and many more thought Tarver did enough to earn that victory over Roy during their first meeting. And if you want to get techinal with the weight situation...Nobody didnt force Roy to cut that weight off that fast so it kills me when people try to downplay Tarver victory...If Roy felt like then he should have tooken the right amount of time to make the weight more comfortablely...I'm a fan of both and i dont buy into bull**** excuses (Roy's excuses or Tarver excuses)...He's a pro fighter and he knows what he got to do to keep up with his career.
This isn't a case of their age, it's a case of who boxing had in the list for being the "future" and big names. Tarver Pavlik Trinidad DLH Johnson All those guys were looked at as good fighters with a future in the sport. You might as well ad Adamek to that list as well since he ran away from the offer HOPKINS OFFERED. Let's be realistic, he's the one that offered that fight NOT Adamek. I'm an Adamek fan and totally agree with him walking out of it since he admitted it's too much risk. Though the reward was going to be good enough to put him on the big picture.
