Greatest of All Time who never amounted to anything

Recently, a poll was conducted nationally to conclude who was "the greatest boxer of all time who never amounted to anything." - The results were intersting. What do you guys think?

for me its between donovan ruddock and frank bruno, and tommy morrison. if tommy gun werent plagued with a glass jaw he couldve went some where. bruno and ruddock relied too much on their power and didnt utilize too much strategy.

 

Corrie Sanders comes to mind -- beat Wlad convincingly, had tools + natural talent, didn't feel the drive to rise to his potential.

 

Mayweather Jnr - I know he won a bunch of championships and ****. By this point we should be saying he is top 20-15 ATG. C'mon Money, please step up.

Kostya - Awesome amateur career but kinda disappointing professional career. Maybe because he didn't get superfights as a pro. Would've been cool to see him against Mosley/Mayweather back then.

Dominic Guinn - Man I remember the HBO BAD squad pimping him up as the next best thing. I ate that **** like it was medium rare kobe beef.

 

Ike Ibeabuchi...dude looked like a total beast

i thought mark breland was kinda disappointing, he was really pedestrian as a pro and arguably was greatest amateur of all time (US)

What the **** have you been smoking? Tszyu was the undisputed JWW champ. How in the hell is that not amounting to something? I'm not even going to get into Mayweather, that's just plain ******ed.

 

I'm not hating on those two fighters, hugger. I'm not denying their accomplishments either. I'm just saying I'm expecting a whole lot more from FMJ. I expected a whole lot better from Tszyu. His accomplishments as an amateur trumps what he did as a pro.

 

He was trying to say Floyd Mayweather hasn't really done as much with his skill set as he could have. Only the one's who have him anywhere near top 20 ATG status would disagree, but these people are ******ed and have no credibility. Most of us don't even acknowledge these people most of the time.

The only reason he isn't top 30 ATG material is due to his unusual knack for fighting Gatti, Baldomir, Marquez, whilst supplying his fans with enough ammunition to defend him on Boxing forums. God knows, if Leonard had retired without having fought Benitez, Hearns, Duran, and Hagler - he'd be in the same boat. A fighter supremely skilled just not taking on challenges.

My vote would go to Ike, the guy who demolished Byrd and actually outfought a prime David Tua. There is little doubt in my mind that he'd give Vitali and Wladimir extremely difficult fights if he was around today, and Lewis might not have enjoyed fighting a physically imposing, granite chinned, dynamo like Ike Ibeachui either. What ifs. Damn shame.

Michael Nunn never amounted to his potential either. After destroying Kalamby and toying with Tate, he should have one on to great things. Incidentally, I had him a couple of points up before he was stopped by Toney.

 

Fernando Vargas comes to mind. He had such a decorated amateur career winning almost every tournament out there and making it on the US olympic squad while having a style more suited for the pro ranks! He was special, becoming the youngest jr middleweight champ ever (whatever that's worth considering the rather recent inception of the division) he also knocked out his first 17 opponents in route to a title which was or is a record. Vargas had all the physical tools not the mention an inate ability to duck punches. Personally I will always wonder what would have been of Vargas had he beaten Trinidad who at the time was a top 3 p4p guy and arguably one of the greatest punchers of his or any era. He was on his way towards greatness but in the end amounted to nothing.
