Let's just assume for the sake of argument that Cotto loses to Pacquiao. If that happens, Mayweather will most likely fight Pac and Berto will fight Mosley in January. The WBC would probably strip Berto due to inactivity which would leave the belt vacant. Would Cotto then go after the vacant belt in the wake of his loss to Pac? It would help to reestablish him, and it would make him a 4 time champion(all vacant titles).

I never claimed to have a crystal ball, hence why I started out my post by stating "let's assume FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT that Cotto loses to Pacquiao".

More than likely - because of his name and following - he'll go for it.

I just don't see him losing to PacMan.

Yeah but you went a bit too far with the Berto stuff and the vacant belt. If Cotto loses to Pac he will do some serious soul searching and it's hard to predict what will happen with his career. IMHO he is goint to beat Pac

He may not have deserved earning the belt in beating Urkal and Jennings. But he proved it is his with wins over fighters like Judah, Mosley, and Clottey.

Although nowadays, the straps mean nothing. Mosley is the champ until someone beats him, vacates, or retires.

If that's how the situation plays out, he probably will yes. And why not? It's a belt after all, and it's one he's not one before. I think it's pretty ridiculous though that fighters get stripped for taking on bigger challenge, it's a joke that Berto will probably be stripped for fighting Mosley, yet they'll probably let him keep his belt if he fights Selcuk Aydin or Ivan Kirpa, and will definately let him keep it if he takes the Collazo rematch.

Or maybe Mosely is still beggin for a big fight at that point and Miguel would fight him for the other strap, many things can happen. I like many others honestly think that Cotto will beat Pac

Name me some HOFers who won 3 vacant belts. Name some that were 29 years old and still had not beaten a champion for their belt. I'm not even trying to come down on Cotto here. But he does have a track record with vacant belts. The last time he lost, he went right after a vacant strap as well.

Well I'm going to risk the wrath of other users for this, but I think Cotto will beat Pacquiao!

I just think Cotto is being sold very short in this one!

Wow, nice commentary newbie. He only "fights" for vacated titles. This is the mark of a "NON-FIGHTER"! LOL What a joke! You're last sentence, if we can even call it that, isn't even worth mentioning. He fought Margarito (at one point the Most feared man in the Division), Clottey( Who NOBODY wants to TOUCH! Not even Mosley) and Mosley, do I really have to say anything at all ?! He's had the Hardest schedule, apart from Jennings and Gomez in between, in the WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION! Yet he gets slammed for this nonsensical "vacated belt title wins"? Someone ban this clown!:patsch
