LOL, You act like there is some hatred between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans? You forgot to add he married a Puerto Rican too. THere is a strong competitive angle, but I dont see the hatred. If anything its more the Mexicans who try to spin everything out of proportion. They didnt like ODLH not because he fought Mexicans early on, but because of his clean Golden Boy (not 100% Mexican) image, and the fact he was one of the first marquee Mexican fighters that wasnt a blood and guts warrior and was open about fighting smarter which angered many Mexicans.
Regardless of who he fought, and he noone can say he was a ducker, it was never enough for a certain group of Mexicans, who wanted to see him in a bloody brawl every fight.

I may make some sly remarks about Oscar but the man was one hell of a fighter who faced and beat some very good to great fighters.

 

No not hatred, Boxing rivals. Puerto Rican & Mexican fans have earned more than eachothers respect. Miguel Canto & Salvador Sanchez changed the Mexican stereotypical Left Hooking basher, long before Oscar came around.

 

In the Trinidad fight, not to be harsh, but I'll say Oscar was dumb, just like Ken Norton in the third Ali fight for coasting in the last round. He should have closed out the show in proper fashion, but he let Felix tee-off on him, but I will admit that Delahoya should have been given the decision victory in that fight. He was robbed there.

Against Mosley in the second fight, what people fail to realize is the body shots that Shane landed in the clinches when both fighters flurried. This is one of the main reasons Oscar clearly lost to Mayweather. A lot of the shots that you don't see are the crisp body shots that both Shane and Floyd threw, especially when Delahoya was coming in. Another reason, moreso in the Mayweather fight is that the judges actually paid attention to the action inside the ring, rather than paying attention to the crowd noise and hooplah for every punch Delahoya threw which was blocked by Floyd.

Believe what you'll believe, but I know I'm not alone when talking about Oscar's gift decisions. Regardless of what happened in the last round against Quartey of which Mitch Halpern did a fantastic job paying attention to the action, I couldn't count enough rounds that Delahoya won. The right hand shot that Quartey landed in round 9 was one of the hardest punches that Delahoya absorbed. Jim Lampley in the commentary validated Delahoya being behind in the scorecards when he said "going into the last three rounds, Oscar Delahoya is in trouble." Oscar even shook his head in frustration and doubt after the 9th round.

Pernell beat up Oscar worse than Floyd did, and the Felix Sturm decision is still one of the biggest black eyes that the sport has had to absorb on the basis of Delahoya's popularity.

 

Said blacks cant take it the body...but in response to some racially toned comments from Whitaker.

The weird thing is : I don't disagree with your post, but for me ODLH is still overrated as a fighter.

Sure, from a business and marketing point of view, ODLH is probably second to none.

Considering how many sad cases we have seen of fighters who left the ring ruined in every possible sense , ODLH is refreshing contrast. An extremely smart, responsible, and business-savy guy who made the most of his career.

And sure, he is a very good fighter, one of the best of his generation... but he is not that good.
