only $32.5 million for 1 million buys of paperview from mayweather vs marquez???

By satellite, they mean closed circuit (i.e., in bars and the like). I'm not sure whether home satellite systems are included in the 'cable' numbers or the 'satellite' numbers.

 

Pay Per View has to be split with the providers (DishNet, Direct TV and other cable companies). If a customer is paying $50 for a buy only half goes to the promoters. The TV people split up the rest a hundred ways.

 

Even if they mean bars, bars get charged a whole lot more than $20. I don't know the exact amount, but it's may more than the cost if an idividual bought it at home. That's why some bars don't carry certain fights. If it was only costing them $20, that wouldn't be the case. Besides, 475K is a big number. I highly doubt that those are purely closed circuit figures.

 

Yeah, but the $50 mill figure is the total revenue brought in from the ppv. I don't know how they're coming up with the $32.5 mill figure. I think the number was used by mistake.

NEW YORK -- HBO Sports reported today that one million pay-per-view buys were generated from last Saturday’s welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

The one million buy total represents the highest performing boxing pay-per-view event in 2009 and generated $52 million in pay-per-view revenue. The million buys include 525,000 from cable homes and 475,000 from satellite homes. It is only the fifth time in boxing pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight event has attained the one million buy mark. Mayweather, a bona fide superstar, returned to the ring after a 21-month absence and showed no signs of rust in scoring a dominating victory. He has now participated in two events that have reached the one million buy mark.

“Sept. 19 was an event that connected with sports fans across the country,” said Mark Taffet of HBO Pay-Per-View. “Floyd Mayweather has clearly reinforced his standing as a top attraction and fans are excited about his return to the sport.”

Mayweather vs. Marquez will be replayed this Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. PT on HBO. The 12-round unanimous decision triumph by Mayweather will be paired with the live heavyweight title fight featuring Vitali Klitschko and Cristobal Arreola from Los Angeles.

 

The license fee for a bar is $20 per person. If the bar decides to charge more than that, they can do that if they please.

But the press release says $52M, so I'm certainly willing to live with that number, even if it seems high to me. If it's 52M for 1M buys, then the 1M number almost certainly doesn't include the movie theaters, which is even more impressive.

 

The press release also specifies that it was 475k satellite homes. So I don't think close circuit or theatre sales are included in that figure.

Apparently tickets were given away at discounts to jack up the PPV buys figures.

 

That doesn't make any sense. How does giving away tickets jack up ppv buy figures?

This got me thinking. Did they count individually those who watched the fight in the cinemas? It seems that that is the case because everyone in the cinema paid to watch the fight. 1M PPV is possible then with a big percentage of that PPV coming from the cinemas.
