Probably was the greatest thing to ever happen to Welsh boxing. Personally I don't rate him as Wales' greatest ever fighter (Jimmy Wilde gets my vote on that), but I know there are more Welsh kids interested in boxing or even having a go themselves because of Calzaghe.
I've never heard anyone say they want to be like Wilde, Driscoll, Welsh, Winstone, etc. But I've heard plenty of kids say they want to be "like Calzaghe".

Very good answer. I agree, it certainly has had a HUGE impact on the sport of boxing. I think those movies (despite the cartoonish nature of some of them, and the over-the-top, unrealistic fight scenes) have probably inspired more people to take some form of interest in boxing than any single boxer or fight in history.

I mean, there genuinely is (or was, don't know if it's still there) a statue of Rocky in Philadelphia. When you think of Philly's rich history of fighters, they chose to have a statue commemorating a fictional boxer. That says it all.

And you can go to any amateur boxing gym in the country the day after Rocky's been on the telly, and I guarantee you you'll find several new starters there... they might not last, but still...

I can see its been a big influence over the last 30 years but to say Rocky Balboa is the greatest thing that has ever happened to boxing is ridiculous.
