Why Hatton was better than Calzaghe

Hatton is better than Calzaghe because Hatton took more risk in his career!!!

 

One thing that I find sad with Hatton, although he is a good fighter to watch and comes across as a great guy - very down to earth, his boxing skills are in some ways very poor. I mean defensively - when was a boxer taught to use their face to protect them? I watched Hatton sometimes in shock at his schoolboy errors. I mean, he got were he got to with skills (although they were clearly a very flawed skill set) and a big heart. He has good footwork, and his heart and stamina and unrelenting pressure were too much for some of his opponents. But defensively he was and is poor.

Now all fighters get hit - even the mighty Floyd M, but on the whole guys like Calzaghe knew how to avoid getting hit - they had defensive skills were Hatton just used to wade in all guns blazing along the lines of I may catch a few on the way in but once i'm there i'm in! With some work on his defense he could have been way better and more rounded a fighter. So for me Calzaghe is clearly the better fighter. But both fighters will never get their true rating on here simply because they are not from the USA. The USA used to produce most of the great fighters across all weights but these days somethings gone wrong! Especially at heavyweight!

So getting back on track I'll simply end with Joe Cazaghe > Ricky Hatton.

 

Calzaghe was by far a better boxer. However, he did try and fight RJJ and Hopkins during their prime, they ducked him and said he was too unknown etc. Don't blame Calzaghe for dodging when the truth is he was being ducked.

 

Calzaghe is on record already stating he dodged Roy Jones when Roy was in his prime, he even said after beating Peter Manfredo that there is no point in fighting Roy Jones as he is too old and has already been beaten, then he goes onto fight him.

So yes, Calzaghe and Warren are to blame.

More skillful boxer? Calzaghe.
Better boxing promotion and fanbase? Hatton.

As a boxer, Hatton will never be rated above Calzaghe. 46-0, baby. But Hatton will be more well-known, possibly. But for the wrong reasons ie, being KTFO. Twice.

It's really simple.

 

Ricky Hatton does not have slick boxing skills. He is a very limited boxer. That's why he got exposed as soon as he left England.
As for the Kostya fight that was a disgrace on so many levels. I remember that Tszyu knocked him down with a body punch but the ref just gave Hatton time to recover just like he did in the Lazcano fight.

Lots of good points. I'll always remember Hatton as a guy who tested himself against the best and only lost to the two best fighters he could have faced. No shame there. He can hold his head high.

I scored the Hopkins vs. Calzaghe fight for Hopkins, but nevertheless Calzaghe got the verdict. Of course, this is a post-prime Hopkins, and I feel a Hopkins in his prime would have made for a VERY entertaining fight with Calzaghe, winning more convincingly. That said, I do respect Calzaghe as well.
