We know the long boxing history of the Philippines but now it seems like we have different champs coming from all parts of the continent of Asia such as Chris John from Indonesia, Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym from Thailand, Toshiaki Nishioka, Daisuke Naito, Koki Kameda from Japan. If there are more Asian world champs please post them in this thread and pics and video clips are welcomed.:good
Im not sure why people all of a sudden think this is a new thing...been plenty of greats from a range of Asian nations over the years. In fact this has been a bit a weak period for South Korea and Thailand has a few of his its best fighters of this era coming to the end of their careers. We may see some Chinese world champs in the coming years though.
Well I'm not too familiar with past Asian greats but it seems as though they are now willing to fight outside of their country like for example Toshiaki Nishioka went to Mexico to fight Jhonny Gonzalez and knocked out Gonzalez. Japanese fighters have a rep of staying only in their homeland but it seems as though that might change.
sonsona from philippines, an impressive contender named daud cino yordan from indonesia, hozumi hasegawa, just to name a few asian boxing has been on a roll for sometime now, and thanks to pacquiao, we may see other great fighters on different asian countries in the future
Whatarock is correct. Thailand and Korea are on their "rebuilding stage" right now, but they have historically been the Philippines' biggest boxing rivals in the region. Generally, the Thais are tough, hard little men, the Koreans have iron chins and a big gas tank (but weak breadbaskets), the Japanese have big hearts and good skills, and the Indonesians are pretty good too.
Look into a guy called Fighting Harada...Fought in Thailand, the U.S and Australia. Got robbed blind in Oz and Thailand actually. Perhaps the greatest Asian fighter of alltime...Probably behind Pac now though. Koji Sato and Yoshinori Nishizawa both went to Germany in the last couple of years to challenge for titles. Hiroyuki Ebihara wasnt afraid to travel to fight. Neither was Guts Ishimitsu, Shozo Saijo, In Chul Baek, In-Jin Chi, Soo-Hwan Hong, Venice Borkhorsor, Saensak Muangsurin, Saman Sorjaturong etc etc. Japanese and others Asians tend to stay at home because thats the best option for them generally.. In reality they do this no more then Americans.
Them "Not leaving home" is something a boxing fan in the west thinks. But to the boxers in the Asia-Pacific rim, they are leving home and flying to other countries to face good opposition. (and there's alot of them good match ups here) Only it's countries like Thailand, Japan, Korea, Australia, etc. To those guys, that trip is a long ways from home.
Asia had produced some top notch talent over the years...and it gets criminally overlooked by the western boxing media. If you are going to look up anyone I would look into: Jung-Koo Chang one amazing athlete and one of the best you will see under flyweight. Sung Kil-Moon...one of the hardest punchers ever p4p. Khaosai and Khaokar Galaxy..twin brothers and world champs..both hit like friggen monsters for their size..Khaosai the more accomplished but Khaokar looked a bit better overall on film to me. Flash Elorde A great little filo fighter. Jiro Watanabe beautiful southpaw technician. Pongsaklek Wonjongkam not up the standard of the others mentioned but a tidy defensive technician who is a modern fighter, best of his era probably and there is a fair bit of film of him around. Should be enough floating around on youtube and the net for you to get a good gauge of these blokes. That might give you a better idea of the range of great fighters that have come from different countries in Asia...and there are plenty more aswell.
A new casino just opened this week and there are mostly Asians working there. Why is that? Same with boxing?
Yeah I dont see why people always just automatically dismiss these blokes. A lot of them still fight good fighters at home anyway. I cant see how its any different to American fighters hardly leaving their state let alone their country.
Until some of them (besides Manny Pacquiao) can be a top contender at least in the JWW division, than no. And I don't understand how Asians are not fighting in the higher weight classes. Since the end of WW2, they've been eating a lot of pork and beef.
