Iran Barkley vs Roberto Duran

This post gave me the goosebumps.

There are two other things that makes that fight surreal...

1. This victory is unprecedented in boxing history.

2. Barkley did what a younger, stronger, taller, bigger man is supposed to do against a smaller, old fighter. He invested to the body -and he was winding those shots up so hard I thought I saw a few of them come of Duran's back. He applied intense pressure and forced a hectic pace that Duran hadn't seen in about 9 years. He worked behind the jab...although you saw Duran's expertise when Barkley threw a lazy one at the end of round and BING! Duran comes over with a beeee-autiful right counter.

Duran was supposed to either fold or fade. He did neither. Relying on both herculean will and a supreme set of skills not seen since the Golden Era, Duran forced Gil Clancy a seasoned, grizzled, old school trainer to concede "Duran is showing me -again- that he is one of the greatest fighters to ever live"......."I just don't believe this man, Al [Bernstein]"......"Duran just got his second or third win, I don't know"....... And Al Bernstein had the classic observation while Duran was standing in his corner before one of the earlier rounds, waiting for the bell:

"The eyes of Roberto Duran. There's a sinister look there.... even now."

 

Beatifully summed up Stonehands:good I havent actually got this fight on DVD, I have the Duran-Moore fight, only seen Duran v Barkley on youtube, might have to get in contaact with Raging Bull about this one, I guess its about time I did.

The fact he was way past his best makes the achievement all the better. Plus don't forget Barkley had K.O'd Hearns, then later in the re-match, took a decision, so he was no mug.

I paid £10 for the print, which was second hand as had been in a frame, and £20 for the framing. Only £30 sorry. You can't get those prints anymore as they were limited to 850 pieces. I also have a Hagler-Leonard and a Donald Curry solo one.

What I really find astonishing with this fight is Duran's comeback in the last third of the fight. Barkley had the edge after 8 rounds and had been landing great body shots. By all logic he should have begun to take over completely at this point against his smaller and older opponent, but instead Duran stole the show. One of the best comebacks I've seen all things considered.

I consider this his best win. Not his best perfomance, but his best win.

Remember though, one judge did score for Barkman after 12 rds...... Duran won a split decision............. I think Albert Bernstein even scored for Barker by a round or two, yet Gilberto Clancy was in favor of Duran........

I did see and I recorded the live PPV telecast in 1989........ Bernstein and Clancy called the shots......... A full woody popper for me.......
