Winky Wright, known as a counterpuncher and superior technician, was unable to capitalize on the gaping defensive flaws of Williams. He landed very clean punches, but came no where near winning any round in the fight. I see people writing Paul off in the Pavlik fight soley because of his defense. Paul has had the most trouble with small, quick, and slick boxers such as Carlos Quintana and Verno Phillips. Pavlik is not small, quick, and slick. I am not saying that Paul will beat Kelly Pavlik, nor am I saying Pavlik will beat Paul. It just seems to me that a figher like Winky Wright should have been able to school Paul Williams because he leaves himself wide open all the time

Because his defense isn't as horrible as you thought/think.

I think his defense is slightly underrated. I was impressed by his constant movement and ducking in the Margarito fight although he was caught by a lot of punches. He looks like he can be very limber and elusive when he wants to be.

too many punches coming and although williams defense wasnt the best he can take a punch and he gives alot of angles. when he throws all those punches he circles well thats why he'll defeat Pavlik he'll strat before Pavlik can start and he'll circle.

Because Winky didn't have the offense or power necessary to. Williams's punch output is what won him that fight going away. You need offensive variety and/or true KO power to expose a fighter like Williams. Winky, as effective as he was in his prime, was always limited. A whole lot moreso by the time he took on Williams.

Because Williams' offense was more effective...

I watched Margarito stand flat footed in front of Paul and slip his jabs. I watched every decent opponent Paul ever fought catch him with right hands and left hooks. Paul brings a lot to the ring, but his accuracy, defense, and technic are suspect.

Williams is a simple pressure fighter. He attacks and flurries, turns his opponent to his right, attacks and flurries, turns his opponent to his right, attacks and flurries, turns his opponent to his right, ad nauseum.

He landed under 24% against Winky who spent a good deal of time standing around like he was waiting for a God Damn bus. In round 4 of Williams/Margarito Paul threw 104 punches and landed 20!

You'll see all of Paul's defensive and offensive flaws on December 5th. The first time he falls in after missing a left hand, the fight ends.

Williams is constantly throwing punches. Offense as defense. It's like walking through a filed of landmines to get to a unguarded house.

hard to punch a guy when he throws in 20 punch combos
if your gonna beat PW your gonna out box him or eat his punches and demolish him inside. its better to outbox him hes harder to hit on the inside because his defense lies in his inside punch output and the angles he dances in

hes another calzaggi hard to figure
you box that guy pavlik actually has a good style to counter this if he uses his jab and dosent let paul in. Pav jab stopped taylor in his tracks. Granted paul is more athletic why jt is flatfooted maynot be so easy but if paul gets his jab going and win the fight on the outside pav has a long night because he cant comptete inside dosent have the speed for that sneaky in and out attack of pw

Winky just doesnt let them hands go enough...it's apart of his defencive style. He waits for the other man to stop punching and then attacks. That doesnt work if his opponent keeps punching. Thats why Calslaps would out point Winky if it ever happend. Nothing too special about Williams besides his size and punch out put. He does move around well but his defence is far from Hopkins-esk

Because Winky had been out of 2 years and was very rusty and his timing was off....

Exactly right. Winky got through with some clean punches in the first round and PW just came back with flurries with nothing landing clean but were eye catching. Winky did not give Paul a reason to stop throwing because he has no power.
