All the talk of the Hatton Vs N'Dou for the IBO go me thinking this would be the best Commonwealth Title fight I have seen in years. Why is it that UK fighters rarely fight the Aussie fighters or the South African's or the Canadians for this title? If they used the belt properly it would be another way to a world title than going through the European way.
Simply because they make more money going different routes. The Aussie's have their own "state" and "Austrailian" titles and then usually progess to "Asia Pacific" titles South Africa also has it own titles progressing to the "Pan African" titles. The IBO and WBF are popular in both Austrailia and South Africa and therefore bypass the commonwealth route. The Ghanaian prefare the commonwealth route as it offers a decent payday
Commonwealth title is pretty much a way of protecting prospects but still getting them in 12 round title fights that can be on Sky Sports. Its still means more than the IBO. Matthew Hatton lost a lopsided desicion fighting for the Commonwealth title.
i would say the commonwealth belt was a lot more prestigeius maybe 20/30 years ago .tyou would see more of these fights in the empire than you would nowadays
quite right, mainly due to the fact there was no WBO, IBO, WBU or even IBF. In the UK up until 15 years ago you could onlt get WBC and WBA world title fights sanctioned. Therefore the British/European/Commonwealth titles were a higher standard as you had to be trully world class to fight for a world title. 30 years ago only the likes of Hatton, Haye, Calzaghe, Froch would have got world title shots, guys like Rees, Arthur, Cook, Mitchell, Enzo, Skelton would of never got a look in.
When Alan Rudkin fought Lionel Rose for the World bantamweight title in 1969 his Empire/Commonwealth title was also on the line.
Commonwealth title sucks ass. Majorly. Unfortunately you don't get the best Aussies/Canadians/South Africans, you get a plethora of Afrobums. It's basically become a gimmick title these days, which is unfortunate. Dare I say it even the IBO means more, at least they have some decent holders/challengers.
If you stopped fighters from Buckum, Accra or whatever its called fighting there would be no Commonwealth fights there would be only alternative British Tidle fights
Exactly this belt has absolotely no point what so ever if I had my way ir would get cut. The only people fighting for it are the domestic scenes weaker stars and the the B level fighters from Africa, when was the last time a decent credible fighter from Canada, Australia or Africa even fight for the belt? I can only think of one half decent foreign oppo recently and that is Ali Nuumbembe. Any others?
