2003 Bruno loses to Aubrey, the Bruno of 93 tears him a new arsehole. Bruno only ever lost to Smith, Witherspoon, Tyson x 2, and Lewis and was leading 3 of those when he got stopped, and was the first fighter to have Tyson in trouble, very under rated IMO
At the time there were a few raised eyebrows, however, time has shown that Audley was nothing special. Look at how Michael Sprott was able to lay him out, it's pretty clear now what would have happened if prime Frank had fought him. It would have been 2006 before Harrison regained conciousness.
I thought he'd beat Audley back in 2003 if he was to come back, nevermind a prime Bruno. I actually favoured Haye to beat Audley back in those days, and was ridiculed by people on boxing forums. I never saw anything in Audley after the 2000 Olympics. I didnt get swayed by the hype, or what the TV pundits are saying to build up the ratings and strengthen their jobs ! For the same reason I trust my own eyes with people like Tyson Fury, who simply is not any good, sorry. I remember Julius Francis trying to explain to the BBC interviewer that Harrison was not very good, just after he'd gone 12 rounds with him pitifully out of shape. It was bleeding obvious, and the Tomasz Bonin fight was the final confirmation that Audley was crap. Only the deluded and desperately hopeful followed his saga any further ......... And I'm sure Steve Bunce was still tipping Harrison as a world title prospect even after his THIRD defeat against Sprott ! That's Bunce letting his kind nature get in the way of reason, surely. I think everyone who knows boxing has known Harrison hasn't got what it takes, since 2003/'04, and 2005 at the latest. A motivated 41 year old, and slightly off-his-rocker, eye-damaged Bruno, training in his garage and sleeping in a boxing ring in his garden, WOULD HAVE SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF AUDLEY when the fight finally arrived and that bell rings. Bruno would have splattered him all over the ring.
In 2003 it looked like Harrison was going to fight either Hide or Bruno. I thought either would have knocked Audley out.
Yeah, Harrison didn't want Hide, he wanted to pick on an old, washed-up, insane old man who was probably 100% right when he said he could beat Audley inside 3 rounds. Herbie Hide has his flaws, as a fighter, but he got avoided by most British heavyweights, and was never shy to test himself against the very best. He stormed into Riddick Bowe, shook him up and put up a decent fight, despite not having the chin or strength/stamina/style to stay on his feet. Imagine Audley, for all his size, being put in the ring with a Bowe or Vitali, he'd run and hold and maybe throw one half-tap while it lasts, and that wouldnt be long at all.
When Hide tried to storm the ring that time you could tell Audley was shitting himself, even though he was attempting to give it large "Get Herbie Hide out of here, trying to spoil my night!"
Yeah, wasn't he the one who started it too ? He was goading Hide with the question to the audience, "Who do you want me to fight - Frank Bruno or Herbie Hide?" and hiding behind the security as the crowd chanted "Bruno! Bruno!" It's a joke that Audley even got given that position to act like that. Congratulations for winning the Gold medal, but the rest of it was silliness.
